My new Rivarossi GG1 will only go forward. If I reverse, it stutters a bit, the amps max out, and it just sits there. I'm not sure if it ever reversed, I only have run it a couple of times. I opened it, saw no obvious problems. Other trains will reverse just fine on the same test track.

The motor housings in these are free to turn a little because of the way they are mounted in the truck. I would make sure that one side of the motor isn't shorting against the brass wire for the pantographs that runs along the inside top of the shell. In fact, there's a jog in the brass wire in the cab area on one side to run around the top of the motor, so make sure the shell is facing the right direction.
If that's not it, check that there are no cuts or melts on the insulated wires that could create a short when the motor twists.

Thanks, for the tip. I checked the wires, some show where they have heated and melted little places in the chassis, but the insulation is still ok. I bench tested the loco, it runs in both directions, so it's not the motor windings. I tested all over, finally with leads on the pilot wheels, which are the pickups. Bench tests ok. Back to the track, still refuses to reverse. One pilot doesn't seem to have enough pressure on it, the wheel wasn't rolling. I added weight to that end, still no joy. I'm going to continue to examine the pilots, oil the axles, see if I can get contact. I think the contact is lifting when the loco tries to reverse. Something is shorting, though, my amp meter pegs when it stalls.

You might have a set of wheels turned around causing a short. Make sure all the pickup disks are on the same side on each set of divers & the pilot truck. The powered and unpowered sets should be opposite each other.

Yup, one wheelset on the driver truck is backward! It has a tire on the other wheel, so that must explain why it runs forward. I'll swap it around after chores. Thanks so much.
