Recently, I got one of the early Mantua Metal Gondolas with the thought of using it in the coal loading yard. It was used and when I got done tuning it up, it caused me to get after some other Mantua Metal freight cars I had; and also to buy another that I didnt' have. All these cars have some work to be done, but they are all pretty much functional presently and allowed me to see how the Mantua Brass mogul 2-6-0 would do pulling them.

Here's the gondola . . .

and the refrigerator car . . . (I dig the detail on the end of the car with the long brake staff and platform against the "wood" of the casting). Note that the sides are temporarily covered with a poorly printed paper side masking taped in place . . .

and the hopper . . . (I like the details on the end of the hopper with the brass brake wheel and ladder standing out against the rather industrial color. Reminds me of some of the early Lionel standard gauge stuff.)

and the tank car . . .

Hopper is missing it's paper sides. I nabbed one at Springfield to go with my Pacific, in Reading livery.

Yeah Ken, I've got to admit playing with trains attracts me. Did you see that video posted in Loose Ends? Crazy. I do have the paper sides for the hopper (Pennsylvania, I believe; if anyone is looking for them, let me know via PM). I kind of liked the look of that old brass with it's aged patina.

I like that hopper car, too.

I have the Metal Classics tank car. I guess it's solid metal? That thing is heavy.

That brass open hopper car is meant to have printed paper sides applied to it. You Rock Island gondola is the same way with its original sides applied.

The brass hopper like yours in my last photo seen to the right as a bare brass side is now a Missouri Pacific car in this photo with the reading and the B&O. all three are mantua hoppers of the type you have.

Do they have those really old hook couplers that H0 scale trains used to have? You know, the ones that they made in the early days of H0? Whatever the case, nice cars!
