IMHO that Maisto is a clone. Ladders, bumper look to be cast with the shell.
They do have some older dies for a number of other cars; they redid the '33 Willys eliminating the fenders and changing the grille and call it a '34 Ford.

Take a look at this one. This is a Maisto 34 ford and they got it from some older Hot Wheels car. It even has "Hot Tonka" on it. (Maisto owns Tonka.)

I always thought it odd that Mattel, who already owned the Hot Wheels line should acquire Matchbox then turn Matchbox cars into something just like Hot Wheels. I grew up playing with both. The Matchbox cars, with realistic wheels and tough axles were fun in the sand box and the Hot Wheels were fun on the Hot Wheels race tracks.
Looking at the wheels on the Maisto stuff, it looks like they're shooting for the Hot Wheels market, too, with no one serving the sand box crowd.

Some chatter I heard on a diecast forum ( Swiftysgarage.net ), is that the Matchbox line will be revamped later this year (2014 ) to include more "realistic" models. One of the things that has discouraged sales is that they have been putting too much artwork on the modern MB cars, which the kids don't care for, and neither do collectors. The simple ones, like the A100 Dodge p/u truck, the Aston Martin, the Volvo P1800, and others, have been well received. Supposedly MB is going to be doing more along those lines, than the futuristic wild looking "things" they've been coming out with. Other than the hard-to-find modern ice cream trucks, and fire and police vehicles, I have had virtually no interest in most of the new releases. A jacked up 4x4 garbage truck? Sorry, the direction MB had taken has been very poor, actually Hotwheels with their emphasis on muscle cars and more realistic vehicles has drawn me more than usual the last few years. Even though HW has a variety of wild rides, I don't buy those, but the more normal ones have been outstanding, including their premium lines with a few AMC cars in them. The latest is a green AMC Rebel Machine in the Cool Series ( blue packaging ). Anyway, look for more realistic and less fantasy models from Matchbox later this year, and hopefully more toned-down paint schemes. If they get back to the original formula of "real working vehicles" rather than graffiti specials, they will pick up sales again. Its more that the HW line was more important to Mattel than MB, so they have let it languish, but it IS something they bought, so they are finally going to make some changes it seems to bring back the balance it once had ( at least, that is the hope of diecast collectors everywhere ). We shall see.

Ya! I mean look at this Hot Wheels car.
That looks like something I'd see on the road in the 70s or something like that. Now compare an old Matchbox car like this:
To a modern Matchbox car like this:
I'd never expect to see a wifi van like that on the road. The flatbed truck on the other hand I would be very likely to see something like it on the road in the 60s or 70s.

I've never understood the appeal of the ridiculous novelty cars. A few of them are fun to have, but there was never a whole lot you could do with them. When I was playing with toy cars it was either on a city playmat or on the Hotwheels racetracks. The fantasy cars never seemed to run very well on the racetracks, and let's face it, what kid wants their little city's roads populated by giant toilets on wheels?

With you all on this one. Fortunately when I was playing with toy cars (mostly MB/Husky, and the very first HW cars) they all looked believable, like something you would see on the street outside your house. Even the first wild-looking HW cars were vehicles you might see in a custom car show or in a believable future setting. I never understood why MB/HW started to cartoon-ify their vehicles to such outlandish creations. I've always collected cars to some degree but the ones I bought were always the most realistic possible.

I do! Then people don't have to worry about using the bathroom in stalls, they can do it in their cars!Just joking.Really though, it's pretty stupid.
