I have about 33 Matchbox cars and trucks. Thinking about using them on my layout or may just do a display of them all together.

Very few are correct for HO scale. In fact, very few are correct to any train scale, because they'd size them to fit the same boxes. That Lincoln is too large. In the 1960s when that was about all there was, I could see it, but today there are so many accurate HO vehicles out there it's hard to justify using a genuine collectible like that.

I have a small layout, so anything out of scale big is a glaring error. I've seen big city scenes on larger layouts that very successfully incorporated Matchbox cars, though. The thing is to keep them visually apart from things more correctly scaled. It's funny how the mind will accept strange juxtapositions if they're not too obvious. The same layouts that looked okay with Matchbox cars had old steam trains running alongside twin-stack containers. It was not jarring. I expect it would have been jarring if The General were pulling the container train, though.

walt - is there ANYTHING you had as a kid that you don't still have? And in the original boxes no less??

I must have had a hundred or so plus Matchbox cars, as well as Husky, Corgi, Hot Wheels and a handful of lesser brands. SOLD about 99% of them too!

BUT to answer your original question....it is true that most Matchbox, Hot Wheels. etc vehicles are way off scale for HO, but there are a handful that are in HO scale or very close - that I still have. So yes use them where they look good but a dedicated Matchbox display area would be way cool too

And I never had really thought of it before, but shaggy is right about how Matchbox cars can be used on large layouts if placed correctly. There is a club in Parkersburg that has a HUGE HO layout in the basement of a building, and I noticed at their last open house a few Matchbox cars placed here and there. Out of true scale, yes...but they worked.

BTW that is a nice Lincoln. I had one of those in metallic blue

From what I've seen of your layout plans to use slot cars, matchbox cars should be a nice transition between the slightly larger-scale slot cars and the smaller scale trains. It'll look more normal with slot cars running through streets of similar-sized matchbox cars than it will if they're running through streets full of much tinier (and expensive), "scale", vehicles.

Jerry,
There's a couple of things I don't have. I had quite a bunch of the old Redline Hotwheels and still have, but they've seen better days. Like to have about 12 of them new on blister card!
I too, believe that a separate Matchbox display would be nice! That's kind of what I had in mind... and yes, the Lincoln was offered in metallic blue for a period...

Brian,
Thank You! I dearly love these regular wheels cars & trucks....

Ken,
That's what I would tell someone

ChessieRR,
You made a very good point there!

Shaggy,
Great info... Never thought about that...

Lvrr325,
You are correct.. To remotely come to scale I would have to use the old Thunder Jet slot cars...

Artskull,
I agree.. These old Matchbox just look right...

At one time Lesney / Matchbox put the actual scale of the vehicle ( like Majorette did ) on the base of the car or truck. They don't anymore, but usually the big trucks are closer to HO scale than the cars, due to the 3 inch rule. Most of the buses are closer to TT scale, but some are usable as HO. Many trucks are also HO compatible scale-wise. I still buy trucks today that are close to HO in scale just by visually looking at them.

As far as slot car scale goes, Tomica / Tomy actually has/had an HO scale slot car set, supposedly true HO scale, but I need to research those to see if they're out of production, limited in distribution, or what. But that would be awesome to get some of those and use. This is a fairly modern set, so may still be available somewhere. Going to check into it and see if I can get a set with some track.

I just hit a thrift store tonight, and bought about 30 diecast, for the older models like Corgi, etc. Found more than a few I wanted. :)

Hi Walt,

These are favorites on my layout. I don't buy true HO scale cars becasue of the prices.

I have a very large car collection just begging to stretch their legs on my new layout ( When I build it that is, LOL ). Much like trains get swapped out on the layout, so will my cars.

Those are really nice cars you have posted.

Some of the regular wheels from the 50's are tiny.

Thanks for posting this topic.

Did the Jaguar look like this one?

Here is a car transporter with old cars on it

I got the tractor from a train show Had no clue what it went to & I got the trailer from UK
It took 11 days to get to me
The trailer is older cause of the grey wheels

right, I had a red Jag identical the red one walt posted, but different from the body style of yours busss. Funny it still bugs me some 45 years or so ago losing that thing.
walt - yes they all had stories. And although I sold most all of them a few years ago, I do have a few left, among them the #1 Matchbox I ever had. I'll have to post it I guess, keep in mind it is ancient and even survived being run over by a 1960 Studebaker

Husky cloned the Jaguar and sold it in red, I have one somewhere. So far as I know the Matchbox one was always gold.

That BP tanker and the bus, in that shape, were super deals at $1 each.

Last March I did a show and it was terrible, terrible, I lost money overall based on my sales. But an older guy was selling all the vehicles from his dad's layout - tons of them were Matchbox cars that had never been played with. $2-$5 each for them.

Some of them sold on eBay for $20 and $30 a shot, I spent like $50 and came away with about 30 vehicles.

GIMMIE!!
Only reason I will use MBs, HWs & otherr brands on my future layout is because
Main HO vehicle makers want TOO much money for them!
Husky was made by Corgi It soon became their Corgi Junior line
Husky was sold at Woolworth stores

These are some old ones that were roughed up, painted, repainted several times in their existence. I finally recently stripped them and gave them a polish -although one needs a little more attention. I like the look. I don't know much about the police car and the VW other than they are from the late 50's early 60's and they are "made in England" . The one needing more polishing is a Matchbox.

Hey thanks ken - at last I know what these things are - "Budgies".

And what a great example you have there ben. Looks perfect! I remember mine was - long ago - originally painted black.

living here in uk a lot of shops went bust in 80s,and i would drive around london delivering flowers for a florist,my area being greater london,if i went past a good looking toy shop,i would go in and ask,9 times out of ten they wanted silly money for their old displays but occasionally you would hit the jackpot,i once picked up a complete smurf display with about 40% of the smurfs,if i kept everything i picked up i would need the albert hall to store it,but i had lots of mates with toy shops and would pass most on for a quick profit, cash is king,so i only kept what i wanted, and moved on,ken
