While visiting a Hobby Lobby at lunchtime today, I found not one, but TWO different cabinets with shallow drawers that would be near PERFECT for HO train storage! There's still a bit of wasted space, but not much. Tall unit is $195 on sale, the shorter unit is $135 on sale. Debating whether to try one or not. This is what I had in mind for drawer storage space, no distance between drawers, minimal height. And they look nice, better than cardboard boxes my wife is constantly complaining about. The shorter unit has a wider drawer, and only 8, while the taller has 12. Can probably get the same amount of stock in both. Decisions, decisions.

Jerry

PS - and yes, I did happen to have an HO engine in my car when I visited, so I could try out the spacing height to see how they'd fit. Very handy indeed.

Jerry - that's some very classy looking train storage. it's very hard to find drawer units that can efficiently hold HO trains like those appear to. And I like the bigger drawers/storage at the bottom too, for bulkier pieces or stacking items.
If your wife is like mine I'm sure she will love the look - but they are edging into the pricey side for me. Of course, looking at them, and thinking about how many pieces you could fit into all those drawers, it's probably more cost-effective than at first glance. What do you think, about 14-16 average sized pieces of rolling stock per drawer? That's pretty decent!
Now...if I could convince her it's for the house, and not my trains...

Nice, Jerry! Just when I'm ready to empty my storage boxes. My wife, a school teacher, is excited about me getting my train stuff set up... And contests nothing that I buy for them.

Short boxes will fit neatly 3 rows wide by a dozen or so tall in a "what-a-crate" which Michaels sells, use a coupon and get them 40% off from the $12.00 or so regular price.

Longer boxes will fit also but stick out of the top. But they stack nicely.

I'm thinking about 10 to 12 pieces across, if you had 40' stock, that might be 4 rows deep! I did NOT have my tape measure with me, darn it, so couldn't get an accurate size, but with the picture of the small yard switcher, it can give me a decent estimate. I'd say as long as you weren't talking about 70' or 85' cars, you could probably get 3 rows in, at least 8-9 across, in the slimmer drawer. There's a Hobby Lobby about 30 minutes from me, so I may go on Sunday to visit that one if possible, and do some more measurements ( and maybe buy one ). I have a rotating 3 foot tall pedestal shelf unit, that is not very efficient, I could replace that with one of these, in the dining room, and it'd look awesome AND hold lots of my trains. So will try to go visit a Hobby Lobby again soon. I'm thinking I want to try one at least. You figure 12 drawers holding at least 30 loose items apiece, that's a LOT of rolling stock! 360 individual pieces. All vertically stored in a visually appealing cabinet unit.
