Folks never fear I'm going to run out of stuff to shoot eventually

Til then, my SOTW is a L&N heavyweight passenger set, pulled by an IHC 4-6-2 Pacific.
The Pacific began life in Lehigh Valley paint, which I switched to L&N.
All the cars, with the exception of the combine, were found at a train show years ago in pieces in a couple boxes, minus trucks. They have wooden roofs and metal sides. Someone had started them years ago and never finished, so I stripped them back to bare and started over. The combine was found at a train show recently, it is a plastic body Hobbyline - originally in heavily worn PRR colors.
I don't know how prototypical the decals are, they are old decals I had on hand and in the dulux gold lettering that was used.

Very Nice as usual, Jerry... Again, you are invited to come to Ohio in the near future to detail my layout... To spare me from having to do it !

I'm Impressed. quite a nice job of restoration. You should post your running account of how you did it in Kitbashing.

Very good work !!!

Thanks Frank - my wife always asks me when I show her my finished projects "did you take before and after pictures?" And I always intend to on the next project, but invariably when I start a new one I get so caught up in it I don't think to take pictures and track my progress. I think the only time I really did or do that was with the layout.
Not a whole lot to these cars, really a matter of redoing everything. I don't even know - with the exception of the lone plastic car - who made them, the parts came in boxes that had nothing to do with them. I left them sit on the shelf for about 3 years, not sure if I even wanted to tackle them, but once I started it was a fun project.
As I said, they came minus any trucks, so I gathered up a collection of Roundhouse passenger trucks that I thought would be appropriate for them - all of them 4-wheel trucks. I had seen some cars similar to these at the Hocking Valley Railroad, and they all had 4-wheel trucks. They are all short enough to negotiate the curves on my layout with ease. The longest one - the "Pullman" on the end - could have got 6-wheel trucks, but I found a larger set of 4-wheel trucks that looked just fine (called Challenger trucks, I believe). And all the trucks have the couplers mounted to them as well. I know there are some that think body-mounted is always the way to go, but these work fine. I prefer metal wheels, so they all got Kadee 36" wheelsets.
The hardest part was fabricating body bolsters - the cars had none. I used as a starting point for these the swing bolsters off of an old 4-truck heavy-duty Bachmann (I think) flat car. Not to screw into - the screw goes up into the wood base of the car - but as a support structure. I also had to use some styrene strips as shims for height and stability.
Each car also had to have additional weight added. I used the halves of some large metal wall anchors I found at the ReStore.
Paint on the metal sides was Scalecoat I Pullman Green, and on the wood roofs a resprayed with Scalecoat II gloss black, toned down with some dullcote. I left the sides glossy though, as if painted fairly new.
Decals were a mismash of old heavyweight L&N that I had collected here and there.
The Lehigh Valley Pacific's decals were stripped as much as possible, the tender shot with black, and then the L&N decals applied. I painted the bright silver handrails in the length of the boiler black. Thought about blackening the silver rods, pins and wheels but in the end left them alone.
This project was not aimed at getting a 100% historically accurate passenger consist, but I wanted a believable looking one, and I'm happy with it. It's a fun train to run and it works well. I'm more interested in passenger trains overall, and they go well with this Pacific - the right look and the right length for the layout.

If I have a "Set" of demonstrator locomotives... does that count? Or should I keep them in Locomotive(s) Of The Week?

John

p.s. If the latter, please check out LOTW. Otherwise, I'll repost them here.

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.

Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Jerry, John, you two are really somethin' else. Two very good modelers. The different decals make the train more realistic, unless one is looking to model a opening day run. The MDC trucks fit perfectly, and the end Pullman's truck type, show your respect for the little people. Providing the best of high speed trucks, for the best of rides for them. ( don't get them upset- they can really mess things up) The over all is great to see. John this is set of the week. You only need two to make a set. There are some modelers here that just need one. I am sure your demonstrators will look just great here in SOTW. I like everyone else will be looking.

Hey Jerry, That certainly is a great looking passenger consist. Very nice restoration. I keep thinking about adding some steel sided coaches to my passenger inventory. I continue to be surprised by how early steel sided cars appeared. As always, thank you for posting photos of your great work and layout.

"A lot of modellers out there who go to these train shows see broken HO stuff and go, 'This is useless' when, in reality, they can still be used for modeling whether it's as a prop on your layout or a cool project to make something old new again."
