My SOTW:
A HObbyline diesel locomotive set... I have to figure out what it is missing and make it complete.

My SOTW? Well, I'll have to say my first train set because it's the one that got me into model trains in 2004 so this one is important to me. Here it is!

Nice set kovacs! Especially for a starter set - looks to be great quality. Wouldn't mine having one of those myself

It is! I got this set 10 years ago and the engine still works as well as it did when I first got it and I haven't cleaned it or anything! Not only did this set get me into model railroading, it also made me become quite fond of Athearn.

Yep, that's Athearn for you. That's really just an old Blue Box drive in that F-unit, and those mechanisms can pretty much survive a nuclear holocaust. I found an athearn PA-1 once in a scrap bin for $5 for parts, missing the pilot, all the steps, a horn, a numberboard, and both couplers... truck sideframes were pretty scraped up... never got an ounce of maintenance in its life... but that drive ran like brand new when I put it on the track!
Those freight cars should prove to be completely indestructible too. They, also, are reissues of the same BB toolings everyone's known for decades. Okay, I don't mean indestructible as in unbreakable, I mean as in impossible to break so that you can't get them running again. I spent a couple hours the other day fixing up an old Centerflow which fell 20 feet onto a hardwood floor... whole thing split in half THE WRONG WAY (like, bend it so the trucks are touching each other) ... both truck kingpins broken off (normally a death sentence)... now, as soon as I can find another pair of trucks, it's all set to run again like nothing ever happened.
Basically, you cannot kill an Athearn train, period, and that's why they're awesome and I'm still mad they dropped blue box a few years back. And now since I'm sure most of you have already heard me rant about that before, I'll be quiet. You got a cool set. Enjoy your Athearns!

This is exactly why I liked Athearn the second I got this engine running on my then new layout in 2004. Athearn rocks, period.

Now THAT is how you make a starter set. As rugged and reliable as HO gets. I'm also really digging the funky red sneakers on the gon.
I checked Athearn's site, but they don't have any sets currently available. That's a real oversight, IMHO. And Walthers should drop the tooling for the old Life-Like pancake drives in a volcano somewhere and put together some real starter sets, maybe with simplified P1K equipment. At least Bachmann has some decent sets now.

Ya, there just doesn't seem to be any H0 manufacturer that makes good starter sets besides Athearn. I could be wrong though.

Could not agree more. That further illustrates the rant I was giving about the lack of a BB-like line. At least recognize that model railroaders have to start with something, why not attempt to give them an Athearn starter set and keep them loyal into the future? And Walthers is really missing the boat too, not expanding the P1K line. Bachmann? Probably thinking way ahead of everyone else at the moment, but even they show signs of heading toward the stratosphere with Athearn. I'll give them credit though for giving attention to the lower end of the market. The only brand-new product I have bought in the last 4 years has been Bachmann - one of them a DD40AX and the other the Santa Fe warbonnet F7A. Good quality, good detail.

I'd have to agree with you on that one.

Really enjoy the use of color, as always, by wks, who keeps finding new combinations. The orange on the rolling stock and head end power mirrors the autumn foliage. Very clever, visually stunning. Keep it rolling!
