Hey guys, after a bit of a hiatus for school I am back, and had an idea for a new topic.
Post pictures of your favorite freelance/fantasy paint schemes for locos or cars. Either models or drawings!
Starting it off with my kato sd90 as a freelance SPSF heritage unit...

I used to do a lot of these computer repaints:

And my favorite, the SD3.8...

More to come if the appeal exists :]

How about the Great PUmpkin Route? Rises in the east, and brings all the goodies to those in the West. LOL!

I'm going to have to post my computer repaint of the Santa Fe project I'm working on with the TOFC logo, it's on the computer at work. And I'll have to take some pics of my home road JNXT scheme. Really like seeing these freelance/fantasy paint jobs keep them coming!

With those stripes, a train of those would start looking like an EKG readout! Nice car, love the colors. Kinda GN-ish

First version. Will probably change a bit, depending on what size decals are available. Or...I could print some myself

Here are some photos of the home road - JNXT. Pretty basic scheme, although I plan to enhance it as time goes on. The passenger cars will retain the classic unpainted, polished metal style though.

tramp these homemade decals are not hard to do. You will need decal paper and an inkjet printer....and a good sharp image to print. Decal paper comes in clear or white. If your item you wish to decal is white, you can use the clear. If it is anything else, best to use the white paper. The only drawback is to remember you are using an inkjet and as such, can only print what it can print - so, no opaque white letters or images, it can't print white. Once you print your image, apply decal film, a couple of coats - it's clear and comes in a bottle from Microscale. Once good and dry, you have decals! and it works just the same as any decal from that point on.
Now, on the SD24 I decaled, I masked and painted a white square for the white decal to sit on so it would be nice and white. Or I could have even used a clear decal film. But any time you have an image with white in it, you have to print on white decal paper or paint a white space. On the caboose it didn't matter, since it was painted white. On the passenger cars, the little JNX logos were on white paper, and the JNXT black letters were printed on clear, so the silver would show through around the black letters.

| Thanks for the info. I made some graffiti with my grandkids names and I will try what you have said. The graffiti is different colors just like the real stuff, so I will print that on clear paper. I will also try my luck at painting a loco & caboose with the logo - F & R B Lines. Not sure what color I will paint them.

Really the best advice I can give is to experiment. Think of the clear decal paper as being like those old overhead projector transparencies - you put it over white it will show up good like on paper, but put it over colors and colors will not quite cover the color. Or in other words, the ink is not real opaque. My first decal project I was putting cream L&N stripes over a dark blue loco. it worked, but I had to put down 2 layers of the stripes, in order to cover the blue. It's all in the inability of the inkjet to print in white. Once your mind grasps that, it's not too hard to work around it. Last word - plan on doing a lot of test prints on plain white paper before you do your decal sheet, this decal paper is not real cheap! And I learned to cut mine down to smaller sizes if your printer will handle that, to conserve all I could. Have fun!
