I scored this President Adams Mantua on ebay for 50 bucks shipped in original box. Was missing the pilot and one handrail. I had a green pilot that is close enough until I find the correct green color. Bent a hand rail and it's up and running.

Well I will have to break the all-steam LOTW and go diesel - a Bachmann F7 I got a couple weeks ago to pull my Tyco Santa Fe Chief. One of my rare new purchases but for the money (under $50) I think it's a good one

Neat locomotives and photographs. I'm curious, Ken and Tom, what radius of track do you use to run those larger locomotives on?

String Bob - these Bachmann diesels are decent runners. Runs smooth and performs well at low speeds too. I've heard lots of comments elsewhere about how lightweight they are, and they are light compared to an Athearn F7. But they pull amazingly well all the same. This one is pulling a full Tyco passenger train with a B unit around some long curves - and that's pretty good, since Tyco passenger cars are relatively heavy and not the most effortless rollers. I think Bachmann is filling the void that Athearn left on its way out of my price range - good running realistically priced locos.

Steven, I like your artistic use of you model railroad. It reminds me of an author named Bill Henderson who used to write fiction stories for Model Railroader Magazine and illustrated them with photos from his layout. There can be more to Model Railroading than building and operating a layout.
Kudos for creativity.

GREAT photo - I'd like to know how you went about taking it. Really captured the look of those old photos - in fact if I had seen it without any explanation I would have assumed it to be real

Hi Ken..
I think I have ~4 right now. One may only be a boiler shell and cab however. Not sure. They are hard to get and for some reason, seem to sell high when someone else sells them! LOL! I just saw one sell for nearly $100 or more. The last one I sold barely hit $50, so I decided they looked fine just right where they were in my collection. I paid ~$65 for this one incl s/h and it came with a Mantua 8-wheel brass tender.

It is indeed quite an honor to be compared to the great Bill Henderson. I have been a longtime reader of MR and I can recall several of his excellent articles from the past, thank you all for the great compliments.

My $25 eBay buy from about a year ago. Not done yet! Will one day add some details, some #5 Kadee's and new paint. Got a chance to do some work on it and she runs great!

Cool little locomotive there Justin. That ought to be able to squeeze in anywhere on your layout.

They look great with details added Justin, but Kadee # 5's wont fit under there without some major modification to the pockets!

Justin, Kadee #148's, with the metal 'whisker' springs, should fit in the original coupler pockets. Just use the original cover or make one out of flat plastic.

My LOTW is a Mantua Shifter. I've had it for a while and have done some cosmetic and electrical upgrades. At a recent swap meet, I picked up another shifter with valve gear on it. Since I like the engine pictured here better than the one I just bought, I moved the valve gear onto it. Here's the result:
