An Athearn U-boat I picked up from ebay, came as undecorated so I went Conrail. Was one of those auctions that was priced so low you couldn't pass up so I figured I couldn't lose. Put it on the track and it spit and sputtered, but after a good clean/lube it runs great. An unexpected bonus, it came with a super-gearing kit - so it crawls around the layout nicely. Took awhile to get used to, kind of like running in first gear on your car - but it also has the same effect, better low speed control and more low-speed power.

Got a odd Mantua this weekend for $20. (not bad considering not stack and wrong tender trucks!). Just noticed the odd mis-print issues on tender and was on both sides!

Those are some nice looking locos guys. Here is a brass U-25-B that I picked up as a total basket case. It had an awful paint job for Penn Central and was peeling and flaking. It only seemed right to follow through and paint it in Conrail just like the prototype. It ran but boy did it pull some amps. To solve that and to get it to run with the rest of my collection, I slapped it on an Athearn U-boat chassis.

For my LOTW offering, I would like to present a recent purchase:
A Lionel 0059 HO Minuteman USAF Husky Diesel Locomotive Switcher. Came with a lot of 6 other boxed AHM freight cars for a grand total of ~$33. Not a bad price if you ask me. Needs a little cleaning though.

Is that merely a mistake or an evil plot? The occult symbol for evil is a 5-pointed star with one point down. The lowest point stands for God, the Divine Creator, and the other points stand for the four elements of the created universe: earth, air, water, and fire. The fundamental disorder of placing the created order above the creator is emblematic of evil, in general.
It would be best to fix that soon, before the layout becomes demonically infested. HO poltergeists are NOT pretty, and you DON'T want to find out the hard way what CV666 is in DCC.

I don't have any photos, but I've been working on the Tyco 4-6-0 that I bought a few weeks ago. Seems it has a lump in its gitalong and I've been trying to smooth it out. One thing I did was enlarge the siderod holes so they wouldn't bind on the mounting screws. Then, I made spacers from o-80 nuts to shim the sidedrods for smoother operation. That helped, but led to another problem. The rods between the scond and third drivers were hitting the cast on brake cylinders on the bottom of the boiler casting. I haven't completely fixed that, yet, but I should have it fixed tomorrow morning with a few swipes of a file and a modeling knife

That Chessie actually has no brass axle bearings--they're not missing--the axles fit in the frame fine--I think at some point in the 70's, Tyco cut some costs--runs fine, though.

The Teakettle is an old LifeLike. I received one as a gift from my mother in the mid-70's. It ran so poorly that we returned it. I was able to pick this one up at a train show for $10. As a more "experienced" person now, I can tweak a loco and keep my track extra clean, so it is an acceptable runner, but these were never very good--I picked it up mostly for sentimental reasons, not to mention the bicentennial theme.

Walthers Trainline Santa Fe "Bluebonnet" GP9M diesel locomotive:
I will admit, Walthers makes some great mid-range locomotives. Too bad they discontinued the F40PH and Dash 8-40B(W) models. They may not have been as detailed as Athearn's but they have good high-quality motors!

I have 2 of those GP9s and one runs flat out amazing while the other struggles a bit. They are short on details but are great pullers and are very inexpensive.

I've never acquired any of the Trainline Geeps, but they are also dead ringers - even more so - to the Model Power ones. In fact I thought for a long time that they were one and the same with different branding, because the shells match exactly. I'd like to compare the drive chassis of the two just to see

The Walthers Trainline Geeps are upgraded versions of the 90's upgraded Mantua / Mehano GP20's, which also run beautifully. They have roughly the same frame & drive, with the same Mabuchi can and one flywheel.
http://www.tcsdcc.com/Customer_Content/Installation_Pictures/HO_Scale/Walthers/Trainline%20GP9M/Trainline_GP9M.htm
The Walthers handrails look a little finer, and of course the pilots have been filled in and couplers body mounted, wheels blackened, etc. The molds must be in China now.

Nelson - thanks for posting that, an excellent view of the insides of a Trainline Geep!
First of all, no - the Trainline and the Model Power aren't the same, but at the same time it's amazing how similar they are.
The shells ARE the same, exactly...as well as the handrails, although the Model Power pilots are not filled in at all. The main differences in the chassis are the Trainline has a lot more weight (and believe me it needs it). The Model Power does not have the overhead central weight bar or the added weight on the sills near the front end, nor does it have a flywheel. The power trucks look to be identical. It also has a Mabuchi can motor. Interesting about the Model Power - it has a 'GP-7U' designation.
Anyway, the Trainline looks like a pretty decent loco, worth looking into. This Model Power is fairly bulletprooof, has many hours on it without a bit of trouble, but as I mentioned it does need more weigh and also a flywheel. I call mine 'the coffee grinder' too, it has no need for a sound system

Jerry, the Mantuas had the upper diecast weight just like the Walthers, which Model Power seem to have left out. In the 90's Mantua advertised their re-tooled F7's and Geeps as weighing 1 pound.
