Starting a thread where I will post about my 8X20 train/slot car combo layout. IF you like Tyco trains this should be interesting... Will start with a few older photos to let newer members see some of what this layout will be made up of. New photos will be added as progress is being made. As of today I have over 98 percent of the trains, buildings and light ups, etc that I need. I have purchased a small amount of building materials for the layout table. Hoping to get to Lowe's in the next few days to buy the plywood sheets and more.

This layout will consist of a lot of four lane slot car track that branches off into two, 2 lane roads that pass thru downtown. There will be 4 intersection crossings on the Main Street where a 2 lane road will cross the 4. These intersection crossings are "old style" Tyco track.

Old style Tyco Road & Rail track. There will be 6 of these in one section of the 4 lane. Two rows of three, and joined side by side by the rails...

Thomas, lived the trains / slots years ago. Only in a much smaller layout...

The Tyco Fluorescent lights are going to be placed along the 4 lane section. One on each side about every 16-18 inches. I have 96 of these and don't think I will use all of them. The other lights will be used around the layout. I quickly counted over 250 light ups in my boxes...

I knows what you mean, Walt Even I hate opening up old packages
Here's a idea Keep one package of each unopened but open the others
Someday when & IF I get out of my tiny house & get a bigger house to install a huge layout
I will do my lights & stuffs with LEDs!

I forgot Did you need any extra tracks?

Hi, Ben... I also will keep all the empty light packages. Yes, I need train track as I merely have none. I'm going to use all nickle silver with at least 22 radius curves up to 35 rad. As for the lights I personally could never molest these older poles, etc to change them to LED. I have problems just unpackaging them...

Ken, thank You... And yes, this layout will provide a lot of joy for many. I too, was one of those people who had to wait years, before having room for such an idea, to become a reality... I thank God, for all of the nice things that has happened in my life since May 2013...

Seriously walt I know it's going to be fun to finally see all those cool accessories in operation. And you won't regret keeping your curves at 22" or above - any trouble doing that is well worth it to enable you to run the big stuff

Thank You, Jerry for all of your input.

Another plan is to reverse the old style Tyco Bridge Track, to an underpass below the railroad at one area. My 70s layout had a section of slot car track the went over the railroad. Even then as a teen, I thought this raised slot track look unrealistic... I believe, the underpass will add much more realism. Of course these pics below , we're just thrown together for a quick pic...

A few buildings that I have for layout and I'm not sure of where they will be placed yet. Once the slot track gets placed I can figure out where what goes.

One pic is the Tyco Center Street buildings without the sidewalk detail it's added.
Some Life-like, homes unbuilt in this box.

So Walt, is every street on this layout going to be drivable slotcar track, or will there be some "dummy" roads as well? Looks like your town will have no shortage of buildings.

Eric, I'm sure there will be some other roads & alleys but not sure where yet. The slot track will be the first thing on the table top. Then I can plan surrounding detail.

Ben, a long 4 lane goes right down the center of my layout. I hope to place many buildings on that stretch ...

Below is an old plan for my layout. But this one was only for an 8X12 which left one end being crowded with slot at track!
The slot car track has a long section of 4 lane. The six red dots are 3 inch road and rail crossings. The eight orange dots are intersection crossings. Green spots are where an underpass goes below the railroad. Plus the 8X20 gives plenty of room to spread the crowded area out. The pink ink lines are two sets of rails with a third going somewhere.

Managed to get the Blazer and bought 20 new 2X4s today. Bought'em at a Lowe's that's 42 miles from home. I have 4 other new studs to put with'em. Will get the plywood sheets at the store near our home. Gonna burn $200.00 on the bench before ever getting anything on it... It's all good.

Today, I managed to get some studs cut. Also put 10 2X4s in the basement that doesn't get cut. My biggest problem now is time as I've been staying with a sick elderly friend who needs. Time with family at home is limited. But I am slowly making progress.... I'm deciding on a color to paint my table legs and framework!

I've got the Life-Like Contemporary Ranch House on MY layout too! I'm also trying to find one of those Burger King building kits (doesn't matter if it's the AHM or Tyco version.)
I see you also got the rare Life-Like McDonald's! That's quite a collectible, though I don't need one of THOSE (I DO have the KFC.)

Today I managed to get the 12 legs cut that will hold up my train table. My final decision on height was 42 inches high with the called half inch plywood on top. I'm doing the cutting in the garage as I don't want the sawdust in the basement...

I later loaded 10, 4 foot 2X4s in the car and brought them to Lancaster. I will cut these down to 45 inches as the ends of each table section... Once these are cut I can actually assemble the structure... I still haven't decided on a paint color for the structure frame under, the plywood top panels...

Today I took a few minutes to run out and buy a gallon of paint for the legs and frame work of the layout table.
Not wanting white or too much color, I settled on a color called "Soft Splendid Peach". I will buy a gallon of some green or brown for the five 4X8 sheets... Now if I can get home sometime to paint 'em...

Hey, Ken... This is kind of my way of keeping track of when I bought or done what. But it is fun to put pics of the present days happenings on too.

MicroBen, I sent you a PM with the paint name and item number. An old body shop joke we had was we would have called this color "Park Bench Green"...

Your killing me Walt. I'm dying to see your layout.

I know the feeling Ray. But I waited years to have room to produce this layout... So even though it's moving slowly, at least it's moving ...

If I wasn't so stupid particular I could have my table assembled. But instead I chose to paint the pieces before building including a perfect color separation between the green top sheets of plywood and the peach lower structure. I guess I'm one of the few that care about what their bench looks like... I'd bet there's medication for that...
