Hi JRG1951,

Looking at the gearing and the nose profile, I would say it's an old Marx F unit.

I cast my vote as being a Gilbert. The car body looks to be from the same mold as the current Model Power F-2.

Model Power has reworked the old Marx F unit mold. It is not the same now. Easy to tell the difference. As to Marx F unit. The side port hole windows are closed where MP is open. Marx front pilot is a part of the frame, MP has it a part of the body casting.

IIRC that's a fairly rare and expensive engine. In part because it was made about the end of their HO production, and in part because they were fairly cheap and I would imagine many were thrown away.

Gilbert used the Varney shell as long as they could, this is the replacement for it. I have one that came factory with a Varney shell that had holes drilled in it to mount it to the Marx-style drive like the one in the picture above.
