Frank, is that a Life Like or Varney car or something else? I like it; I have several Life Likes I plan to operate should I ever actually build a layout.

Beer's other name was called better,s. It also is made with something called bitter's. It should not be disgustingly bitter, just mild background bitter in taste.

As long as we're on Schlitz beer, here is a photo of one of the first car kits I built in S scale in 1972

This was a Kinsman "box of sticks" as wood kits were called in those days. It was a fun job. A new S scale friend talked me into entering it in the 1973 NASG convention, and it won 2nd place. It has lost a roof hatch over the years, and it rolls a little hard now because it spends a lot of time on a little used spur with some other stored serviceable rolling stock

I assume it was in the early 1970's given that this car was only offered for a short time. I say about 74 or 75' which means the car is older than me:)

Drinking never ends well for me so I rarely do it. Last time I got so drunk I fell asleep on my front lawn at 2am...five hours later I'm getting bounced around on a four ton forklift in 30degree weather and direct sunlight. That was a bad day....

That Oppenheimer Casing Co. car is sweet. And Sean, that powered boxcar is quite a find.

My COTW is rather boring compared to those. I've liked these Model Power 48' Old Time Wooden Passenger Cars. Although, I'm realizing that if you model 1890 to 1920 steam era passenger equipment, there is a wide array of styles and materials. In the background of this photo, to the right, is a MP car that I've had a while; repainted Tuscan and glazing and interior seats added (although, you have to have good lighting to discern the seats through the windows). My initial plan was to repaint this newest car Tuscan, though I've probably ruined the value of enough cars and locomotives defacing the manufacturer's original work.

Hi All,

Microbuss: I'm glad to see you got the Marx caboose you have been after for so long. I love Marx toys of all kinds. Nice close up shot, I never really noticed how flat the ends and top are on these cabooses.

Barry: I really like the old time passenger car you have, was that part of a Christmas set? I ask because of the name on the side and the color, a very nice green. My collection of Christmas cars is growing slowly, inspired by Brianstyco. The car you painted on the right looks nice as well, nice touch with the person on the back.

Too much egg nog for the guys in front of the green car, LOL.

Lots of nice cars this week.

Thanks for sharing everyone.

I had a few of those Varney cars "back in the day", and I've seen them at garage sales and in "treasure piles" over the years. I am always impressed with their authentic appearance and realistic "patina".

Barry:

Those were nice kits, but they looked a lot better with about a foot removed from the height of the sides, as I did with this car, and the Oppenheimer car thsat should be pictured here later. I also made an old time boxcar from an un lettered version. At one time, S was known as the "reefer scale" because that was about all that was available, other than AF conversions. I still convert AF cars, feeling they have the degree of realism that suits my needs. I run a fleet of AF converted boxcars as a grain hauling fleet, and a fleet of converted AF reefers that still await painting and lettering.

My car of the week is a string of coal jimmies:

Long ago, there were little 2-axle cars for hauling coal from the mines to the market. I had no particular use for any, but I came upon an article by E.L. Moore describing his project in which he made one from a piece of yard stick, some other wood and an old railroad car truck. I built mine just because it seemed like a fun project.

The floor of the car is a piece of 1/8" wood. The walls are made of file folder cardboard braced with old scraps of balsa. The cars are weighted with taconite pellets. Coal is glued in around the pellets.

The cars are coupled together with drawbars instead of some form of link and pin couplers, but the end cars have knuckle couplers so they can run with my other rolling stock.

Those are pretty fine Don. I'm curious why you modified the trucks; prototype or to look unique?

Check this out . . . this brass Mantua passenger coach sold for $140! I emailed the seller and he didn't have any idea why the bidding went so high (" the moon? "). Looks to me like somebody had "ants in their pants" to get one of these cars, hey?

Yeah, I have several of them myself. I'm curious; how did you figure out there were only 2 bidders?

The prototype had a suspension similar to a bobber caboose rather than a freight car truck. I just wanted to disguise the origin of the things to be less obviously trucks. With a bit more effort, I expect I could have gotten something more like the real thing, but these were just built on a lark.
