Keep with my foreign theme today, my contribution is a french dining car by Liliput, I bought this back in my teens or early 20's, when I splurged a bit of my grass-cutting money on some premium stuff instead of Tyco I may have to run it one day.

Love the choice of vintage cars John & Frank!
My COTW offering is a 2-fer (...well 3-fer actually) dedicated to New Haven:
The two NYNH&H depressed center flat transformer cars were purchased this past week as well as the below Athearn 40' boxcar. Nor sure how many of the transformer cars I have now... I would guess at least 12-15.

| Hey John, Tell me more about that Walthers "Piker" or "Oscar". Was there a prototype for that? That's pretty cool. I was thinkin' someone created that thing; pretty cool to see a kit that unique. All the detail in the interior, I was wondering which drawer the silverware was kept in.

Barry, Funny you should ask. these were made in a series of Walthers cars called "Tongue-in-cheek models" from back in the day. in past years tho, Walthers re-released the Oscar and Piker, which as you see here is a really short clerestory roof passenger car, that rode on a single passenger car triple axle truck....(Would take a serious curve I'd bet!) Not sure when they were first offered but....I know I have seen in them in OLD Model Railroader and MRC magazines.....
These originally were offered as kits... you and I had to build them as we seen fit, the newest offerings are RTR from Walthers!
THEN, interiors. I'm not 100% sure, but I think they may have came new with what you see in mine.....wooden with cardboard overlays, but nice looking for the time and still not to shabby for today! I have to say that stove for cooking in mine is a dead giveaway to what that "area" is dedicated to be!
I couldn't pass it up for a buck as I said.....it was falling apart on the table I got it off of, and still is! BUT, that will change as time permits!

I picked up both of these at a local swap meet in October- the REA car is Accurail and the B&M boxcar is Mantua- with the old metal trucks and integrated coupler housing. I replaced wheels on both with IM 33" metal ones and Kadee-#5s as well (although the B&M photo still shows the horn hooks on). That Mantua has metal door guides- don't know how old it may be, but it looks good. The blue on the REA car is actually more "navy blue" than my poor photo image shows.

About $ 4.00 each- easy shopping!

That is a keeper- it has absolutely no connection to my Minnesota- midwest layout, but it IS very attractive on it's own, as a 1950-ish type item for my transition (sort-of) era modeling. I didn't even think twice- just grabbed it, took my money out and quietly give the gentleman the $4.00 he advertised it for on the table. Maybe it is more common in other areas of the country at swap meets, but I know that I would have spotted it and bought it years ago if I had seen one here in Tampa-St. Pete locally! The question is- what midwestern roads had similar boxcars for REA? Now that is something worth researching from my perspective!

Great question! I have seen REA express reefers normally seen on passenger consists labeled for other roads but I can't remember seeing any 40' REA box cars other than the B&O. I'm sure there are some but I'm drawing a blank.

Jerry, Ron, I believe the C&O also had REA 40 footers too....... as well as CNJ and maybe even the Reading........Outside of that "area" as it seems all were pretty close together......I'm not sure of any others, specially 40 foot box cars!

Hi All,
Great cars this week.
JNXT 7707, Really nice Marx car. Being that it is molded in color is really cool. It looks like a softer plastic than todays cars are made of. I Love it!
My COTW is made by Lima, It has a 2 molded into the sides just below and between the 2nd and 3rd windows on each end, I have only seen 1 and 2 on the sides. Is this 1st and 2nd class?
Any idea on when this was made? It came in a yellow box with red lettering that has the L formed into the window of the box on the left side? There is no description on the box.
Thanks for sharing everyone.

This B&O REA box car is made by Roundhouse ( MDC), They didn't just make this one, or this color. These cars were made in Royal Blue and Pullman green. I have 4 different numbers and 2 in each color. 1880 in Royal Blue, 1885 in Pullman green, as yours 1907 in Royal Blue, and 1999 in Pullman green. I'll post me 1907 here to show you that it is the same but very different. For whatever reason The person doing the silk screen printing reversed the sides. Maybe a mistake , maybe on purpose. Here is my 1907.

Well- if northeastern roads had the REA 40ft box car as a particular item, then- by the powers of freelance modeling granted to me- I will have to create a midwestern analog, perhaps CNW, Milwaukee Road, Soo Line... just to be able to insert such a car "appropriately" into my Minnesota, Sioux Lake and Western layout! That's yet another winter-spring project, and now I have one more reason to attend the upcoming swap meet on 7 Dec that I planned on as my Christmas "self-shopping" treat! Thanks, guys, for the backround on the REA car!

I know, for sure, that the Chicago Burlington and Quincy RR was in on the REA. REA was big and had many affiliated railroads. I don't know what kinds of cars specifically rolled on what particular railroads, but there was a big REA presence in the Midwest.

Just got this A.C. Models vinegar car lettered for Fleischmann Transportation Co. It's in poor shape but I plan to fix it up and add new couplers and archbar trucks.

I didn't like the paint job very much until I saw this car...

... so I think I'll keep this paint scheme.
