At some point, I figured out that an 0-4-0T could go around a really sharp curve, so I looped a 3 foot section of flex track around on itself and made a small loop around a small Christmas tree:

For a movie of the train going around:
https://vimeo.com/82349267

The "ore" in the ore jenny is a non-gem form of topaz known as sand crystals. I found those last month while digging topaz with a friend of mine who is a rock hound. They catch the light interestingly as the train passes under the Christmas lights.

I would like to see what other members have done with the link between Christmas and trains.

HOW on earth did you get that flex track to work??? I made a 10" circle last year with flex track, and it was very difficult. The joints wanted to spring out, so I soldered them together but it still wasn't a smooth joint. I wound up replacing that circle this year with Eldon track, which has factory curves in a very tight radius.

Nice job!

I'm more wondering how he got a Rivarossi docksider to run back to back well with an IHC Docksider

Really dig it though!

Internally, they're both Rivarossi but one has had a shell transplant.

When I nailed it down, I was able to push the joint to where it wouldn't kink.

Thanks, everyone, for the kind words.

Cool little set-up! It's neat to see the two docksiders running back-to-back.

Nice job on all of it. It reminds me of the demonstration of the Penn Line Midget running around the edge of a silver dollar.

The drivers were a dead giveaway that they were both Rivarossi (I think the transplanted shell is a Life-Like). Are they stock running at low voltage, or have they been regeared? They're running at a reasonable consistent speed.

I like the vertical boiler on the flat, and the 8-wheeled bobber.

They're stock running at low voltage. The fact that there are two raises the amperage to where it's easier for a throttle to precisely control. One engine alone would be more likely to go from 0 to 80 in 5 milliseconds.

The 8 wheel bobber is a chassis from tyco's usual streamlined caboose with a section cut out of the middle. To that is added a bobber shell scrounged off of a boom tender car. Both those parts were in a bagged assortment that the LHS imaginatively called a "Bag of Stuff."

whats funny about that 8 wheeled bobber is some rail lines really did convert old 4 wheel bobbers to 8 wheels

I only used flex track for straights. On curves, one rail gets shorter than the other... I remember cutting down a rail on my flex track years ago!

Flex for straights defeats the purpose. You can buy a moto-tool for under $10 at Harbor Freight and use the cut-off wheels it comes with for fast easy cutting on the longer rail (wear goggles, they do sometimes break). In the old days we used an Atlas Snap-Saw.

That was 1974 but I'd think of using the 3 foot straights again today. I have all the metal cutting tools from being an automotive metal fabricator building some extreme customs. I cut HO rails when I was 14 but cut'em with a hack saw blade and filed them smooth...

There's also a special nipper made for cutting rail. One side of the cut is flush and straight and on the other side the rail is deformed. Obviously, you turn the nipper so the clean cut is on the side you want to keep. You have to protect your eyes using this tool, too. The discarded piece can really fly when the nipper cuts through.

On my off day I relaxed and later walked in my neighborhood to see Christmas displays.

Nice house about two miles away from my home seen today December 7 2020.

Same house I videotaped back in January 2020.

Another video from me in showing that home in January 2020.

A nearby house with many displays seen January 2020.

Another video from that home in January 2020.

That home today did not have the extensive decorations this time.
This way crowds do not gather the same way as they did in the past.
For obvious reasons this very different Christmas season.

Classic television show with a Christmas theme episode.

Originally shown in black and white. Colorized recently. This is from their first season.
Their fourth season had a similar Christmas episode in color.
