Hi Everyone, I have a couple of Lionel HO GS-4's that the drive wheels are giving me problems. From what I have learned they are Kadar units. The drive wheels are held together with a plastic center piece - That piece cracks and the wheels separate. I've tried CA adhesive, it only works for a short time. Bachmann makes basically the same unit, I've read where you are able to replace the drivers with the Bachmann drivers, but apparently Bachmann will not sell you the drivers anymore. Bowser made an upgrade kit (3-204) complete with the drivers, but it is no longer made. It pops up on ebay occasionally, but I have been getting sniped at the last minute. Basically what I am asking is has anyone seen the upgrade kit in their local hobby shop? Or possibly have one to sell? Or another suggestion as to how to repair? Thanks? I can post pics if needed. Eric,
I have tried to repair the plastic centers on these type axles. It was a lot of work and was not very successful. I used JB-Weld, If you try this make sure the drivers are quartered properly. The drivers can be inserted at 0, 90, 180, and 270. Make sure they are positioned so the draw-bars hook up right on both sides.
A second option may be to replace the frame and drive train from a newer Bachmann engine. I am not sure about the Lionel GS4, but the newer Bachmann 4-8-4 frames are interchangeable with the older HongKong units. I do not know if the new 4-8-4's will work, but the spectrum and later train set Bachmann engines seem to fit this mold. You will need to move the crosshead and valve gear from the old engine. and maybe the trucks. The J's, GS4, Niagaras, and the Santa Fe 4-8-4's will work.
Here is a post on how identify the newer can motor drive frames, DO NOT buy a sidewinder drive engine, it is a waste of money, if you need a drive. http://www.tycoforums.com/tyco/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11848

Here at this site, Solyndra expects to make enough solar panels each year to generate 500 megawatts of electricity. And over the lifetime of this expanded facility, that could be like replacing as many as eight coal-fired power plants. <> Barack Obama

Zap CA works. I haven't had a repaired one slip yet. Just be sure to completely degrease the wheels & axle with 90% alcohol.

I would just put a newer drive under it. But some Bachmann steam changes a little, I had a Hong Kong 4-6-0 (the USRA 0-6-0 with a tiny lead truck added) and the drive was dead. So I picked up a busted parts engine that ran only to find that the China drive it had didn't use one of the mounts. It fit on there but only after I clipped a piece out.
