How familiar the whole scenario sounds. That NYC steamer was no doubt a Gilbert Hudson. The Burlington diesel might have been an Athearn GP9 or GP30.
My only quibble is that he didn't take the time to do basic maintenance and resurrect the vintage locos. I also wish he'd mentioned what inspired him to model a German pike.
