A warning that I just picked up a virus this morning. It started innocent enough with a request to update my Java program and "improve my browsing experience" and ends up with an unwanted toolbar like ASK, which is almost impossible to get rid of. It's called "Conduit", an doing a search, I found all kinds of downloads that claim they can remove it, for a fee, of course.
The best way to avoid this would have been to not take the bait and try to download JAVA, and this is my warning to you, to do the same. I have been having nothing but problems this morning, and I hope prevent this malicious program from doing the same to you

Having had an experience with Ask, I did the same thing, but it like a rat under a henhouse, it's sneaky. It calls itself "Conduit", now, and consists of demonistic games and videos I have no use for. I have been working to get rid if it all morning. I certainly appreciate your input, though, Ken, it gives me confidence that maybe I can lick this thing

I use vipre, which at least keeps the page blocked as well as superantispyware to keep my system in better shape, you may want to try those...

In and of itself, keeping Java up to date is important to security since many Java updates are security updates.
Like Ken, though, I tend to decline all the piggyback downloads that come with Java and with any number of other downloads. That requires attention because such things are usually selected as a default and need to be declined to be avoided.

Malwarebytes would be a good program to have in addition to a good virus scanner.
To change the subject, thanks for your contributions here, in a short time I see you've been very active. I did notice however that your post count remains at 0. That's due to your username. The forum shouldn't have let you use a " in your username but apparently it did. Obviously the post count does not like it and I'd have to really dig to find out what might crop up in the future. PM me if you'd like to be renamed.
I'm curious, what's the meaning behind your username?

NYC, a couple of things, I've made arrangements to take my laptop to my favorite computer gal; not only is she an ace spyware and virus sharpshooter, she's almost as nice to look at as a J3-a Hudson.
The next thing, I haven't been able to PM anybody on the list, so far, apparently because I haven't sent enough PM's to qualify, but no way to do that if I can't send any in the first place. I've been trying to recover from a bug of another sort for a few days. If I can get sownstairs to my desktop and my good 'ol XP and sign in, I'll contact you and see how to get into compliance I'm approaching a fork in the road, and may have to make a decision to stay with S scale or go completely to HO. I'm feeling a strong pull in both directions. I'll be in touch, probably via the list
My user name comes from my name on the S scale Yahoo list because I don't subscribe to the DCC swan song, thus I'm accused of using string to pull my trains around. I sign my posts over there as Bah-Hoo boB, a direct slap at Yahoo since they've been sucking eggs under our hen house over there and cannot get my name straight on my profile

New York Central, if you could send me an email at user141771@ mediacombb.net, we could get this username straightened out. I see I'm listed as "S"tring Bob on my desktop as well

Hey string bob I know exactly how you feel about the DCC snob forums. I would suggest you also correct your proile. Age 13 and married? As or the alert thank you cause I am getting reminders from JAVA to update when I have the same version on my computer as the one they want me to download. Kind of makes you suspicious.

The only legitimate Java update will appear in your system tray with their icon when their update manager determines there's one available. Don't download anything that tries to bait you with an update through your browser or email.
Apparently Conduit is also bundled with programs such as uTorrent. It's an obnoxious browser hijacking search bar, but based on this removal guide doesn't seem like it's difficult to get rid of.

Malwarebytes should eliminate it easily, and it's totally free.
