That's a neat looking electric, Cat, never seen that one myself, I don't think. Amtrak was experimenting with foreign-based designs, heck, the Metro trains of Washinging, DC are of a non-USA origin, government likes to experiment with our tax dollars apparently. Where'd you find that picture at?

It was a new electric locomotive to be used on there main line passenger trains in the north east corridor. GG1 type being no longer able to draw power from the overhead. This was due to a change in power. They were good enough. not more powerful nor faster. The GG1's day was done. It lasted a very long time.

| When I was in High School, I used to see the GG1's and a number of the test engines from some of my classes. I went to St. Johns Prep (originally called Mater Christi HS, but that's a story for another day) in Astoria, NY. The four track main that goes over the Hellgate Bridge over the East River is right there. I used to do alot of trainspotting.... Also used to stop at Sunnyside Yard to watch the switching and car movement. What memories!

One engine that doesn't get much publicity is the pre-GG1, the P5A, a modified P5 boxy electric with a GG1-like shell. I had the pleasure today to get to pull an O-gauge one out of it's MTH box and check it out for resale, from an estate. There aren't many models of this one running around, I don't think. I've never seen anyone run an HO version, although I bought a brass P5A shell off ebay some years ago, no idea who made it. Anyway, I fired it up, and the realism is incredible, the pantagraphs work automatically going up and down from either end when a direction change is made. The sounds are very realistic, too, and the engineer chatter is interesting. Boss said they're asking $500 for it. Unfortunately, while i COULD afford it, it'd be a shelf queen, as I have no place to run an engine requiring a 72 inch radius of track. Ah well, here's a pic I took of it with my Iphone 4s :

Wish I could post THIS one for my LOTW

That's the Quarter Horse... A Romanian hydraulic locomotive marketed in the United States by Stanray Corporation. It had a Sulzer-designed prime mover and Voith transmission. It was first demonstrated at Santa Fe's Corwith Yard in Chicago in July 1974... It attracted little interest from domestic railroads and was sold to Washington Terminal in 1978 to become their No. 78.

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?
