Got this Varney 2-8-0 last week! good condition, but came with damaged and broken pilot.

got mine for half the price he claimed


this is is the original pic from the auction, here you can see that the pilot is damaged.

here another one. what does the seller do here ? holding the loco at the pilot, or holding the broken pilot against the loco? - Erich

I just picked up a Casey Jones and it's broken in the same place - but the whole front portion shows pot-metal fatigue throughout. Must be certain years are subject to this problem. I saved it for parts -

Erich ; You have 2 broken parts. The frame and the front pilot. This is the weakest part of the frame. Just 2 little , very thin cast members extending forward to provide support for the much larger front pilot. Any hit to the pilot will cause this break. It is not a casting problem but a design one. This casting is no longer made. Your going to have to make some kind of a bracket on your frame to hold the boiler, frame cylinders and pilot together. This is a challenging repair and can be done. Just think about it.

at first glance I also thought that the frame is broken .
Fortunately, it is not. the pilot i can get as a spare part! - Erich
