I myself has one. Kadee's would be stubborn to install. Will have to use a die grinder and a file at most if I'm not mistaking. I just re-assemble mine and un-warp the gear cover!

Those are rare as hen's teeth here in America even, or at least the shows I've been to. Always on the lookout for one. I'm sure I could shoehorn kadees in somehow.

I believe this is the one they call the Midget, supposedly one was in the Penn Line president's office, he had a 50 cent piece and a piece of rail on the outside on his desk, and had a button on his desk, when a visitor pressed it, the little midget would run around the 50 cent piece, it was able to turn that tightly. THAT would be fun to reproduce!
I also have a couple of these, they are sought after, and bring good money on Ebay. They DO look difficult to put a Kadee in, that's for sure.

This isn't mine, just a picture I took of the kit version.

Woooooow.....amazing amount you have collected, Sean !
Another one like this is by Gilbert, I have one of those as well, looks very similar to the D2 diesel Midget by Penn Line. Probably a copy of the same model.

| Gilbert's comes in two versions, one with side rods and a counterweight, then a simplified one. I picked up the first one at a show a while back for $20. The Penn Line I have one complete and one shell and those are the only two I've seen in years.

Hi Ken! there is nothing wrong. but an accurate picture as Kadee couplers are mounted on your D2 would have been helpful. I feel a little left out. that's all. but I've tried to make it a fun. need now no more picture, because I already realiced that it is better to take other couplings. Just jocking! Cheers Erich

| I read somewhere that Crusader production was under 700; combine that with pot metal fatigue and there's probably not many intact ones left.

Erich, here is the #38 coupler Kadee recommends: http://www.kadee.com/htmbord/page38.htm
Judging by the instructions, all the modifications are made to the coupler draft gear box and not the opening in the loco's pilot. Looks like just a matter of narrowing it down till it fits.
I think the narrow pockets were originally designed for loop & hooks.

Thank you Nelson! but there is no way to use a Kadee coupler on the D2 without modifying the loco body ! the coupler alone does not fit in the narrow slot!

will use this couplers now, maker unknown to me! - Erich

Erich ; that is a automatic Model Die Casting coupler. Only couples to another MDC one. KD made a similar coupler that would work. frank

Erich, those are similar to Kadee #4's, which unfortunately are no longer made and aren't easy to find. http://www.kadee.com/htmbord/page4.htm
I'll check my LHS since they have lots of old stock.

You mean this little bugger?

I'm blogging from inside the smokebox.
Why don't they use (restore?) it?
Lack of funds. Personally, I'd rather see the Morris County Central (ex-Southern) 385 Consolidation put back in service. It used to pull excursions there in the 60's and was the first steamer I got to see in action.

she's actually been under restoration for the better part of the last 2 years now. The new boiler is pretty close to being done and the volunteers have been rebuilding the running gear.
