I am building a temporary layout of sorts. In 2 years I plan to build a home with a permanent layout that will be based on Veron/ Alameda area of Los Angeles before the Alameda corridor. Lots of street running and switching is the plan. In the mean time, I built a 4/8 layout and got a little creative. There is no time period rules here and my entire fleet will see action. Here are some progress photos.

After the track was laid down, the plan was to figure out where to set up the buildings.

I so wanted a western town to go with my old AHM brewery. I decided to use the trees I already had and they seem to fit the layout area well.

That coal tower is the "cheap" lifelike unit. Amazing what some paint and weathering do. The photo lighting don't catch just how well it stands out in the layout.

Lots of trucking. A few Tyco action accessories to round off things a bit.

Building layout is still an issue. Seems lke I have a few too many and a few structures might have to go.

LOL! Good Eye. That radio gets alot of use during baseball season. Most of my buildings are not complete. I just kind of lashed them together to know where they will end up on the layout.

I like the city scene you have going...it has a very nice dirty, vintage, industrial look to it. The Western town looks great as well!

Looks like you've kept yourself quite busy. That's going to be a cool city scene and it looks like lots of interesting places for the locomotives to browse. Fun to see these photos. Thanks Ray. Barry

Ain't it amazing what you can squeeze into a 4 by 8 board? Next up is finally getting the painting of the buildings done, people, signage, lights etc..

A modern touch to the layout. I plan to switch between modern and early 50's era depending on what I run.
Here a gorgeous SD unit in BNSF livery pulls a nice consists.

The layout is looking awesome. It's neat how you seem to be working on everything all at the same time. Whenever I do layouts I like to go in stages and finish one thing before starting another. It's starts to get a little boring once it's time for the larger, more time consuming tasks. One day I'll find a good balance.

Thanks DaCheez. Same here. I kept stalling on the roads and eventually decided to just put them down. Doing that and seeing how things were starting to come together motivated me to keep going. Do you plan to do a new video anytime soon?

Lights and stuff is still a ways out my friend.
Yeah that would have made a great looking toco for the ATSF but I think the "merger" got in the way and we ended up with a lot of hastly painted engines.

I'm thinking Microscale probably has those SF truck trailer logos, wouldn't be hard to adapt them to a locomotive. Hmmmmmm........

Hopefully in the next few months. I want to get a good amount of the painting done first, but that shouldn't take as long as the mountain construction did.

Temporary layout you say? It looks like you have gotten further than many of us get on our permanent layouts. Keep up the nice work. I especially like that Tyco piggyback loader.

Wow, this layout is just exploding with all kinds of equipment and imagery, yet it has a cohesiveness to it and its own sort of "parallel universe" quality to it. It is a pleasure to view. Keep it coming!
