Well, I'm working my way through my final college semester. I am currently on track to graduate this May.

So, time for one last under-grad railroad layout. I dismantled the Tinplate Pacific O gauge layout from last semester. It may appear again one day as a Christmas layout, we'll just have to see.

Anyhow, I've been building a new HO scale layout. It started out as a switching layout, but was soon expanded into a full oval running under/around the bed. The 3 track yard, complete with turntable and trolley shed, is built on two slabs of particle board sitting atop milk crates. The rest of the layout is Bachmann EZ Track supported by layer upon layer of cardboard, with milk crates strategically placed underneath for maximum support. The grass is microfiber washcloths from Dollar Tree spray painted with Krylon Emerald Green. The ballast/dirt is used coffee grounds.

I also just weathered the Life-Like 0-4-0 this evening using artist's willow charcoal. I think I like the well-used, sooty look.

Here's a couple photos:

I love it
Applaud your use of "non-traditional" materials too! Excellent benchwork.

Truly resourceful use of materials. Gotta give ya props for that. What did you say you are majoring in? I too am a college student of the non-traditional variety. Some guys buy a Corvette for their mid-life crisis, I decided to finish my education. Senior year for me, only 1 semester left!
