Today I went to the March 2016 Greenberg Train & Toy Show, and bought these...

Nope, didn't buy any TYCO stuff this time; instead I mostly went with newer Bachmann and Life-Like/Walthers (I also figured it was time to remodel my KFC.)

Today I went to Railfest at Lakeland Community College in Mentor, Ohio. What a great show! Even if it was slightly impacted by another show nearby in Ohio, it was five sizable rooms with many operating layouts (8 by my count) and lots of good dealers. Unusual things too like a display of 7.5 inch gauge live steam and "diesel" power and cars, and a model engineering section with operating engines, clockwork, and telegraph sets. One of the Ntrak clubs had a track with a Congressional GG1 and a rake of cars set up with a pistol-grip slot car controller so that kids could drive; my sons were along and got a kick out of this. There was also a Flyer HO layout on a 4x6 table, very postwar looking with Flyer track and a suburban Plasticville setting, and a whistle set up so kids could interact. Wish I had pics, but had no camera with me. :/

I did pick up some stuff there, and also at the Erie train show a few weeks ago (which though smaller was still quite fun, even though i was mostly dealing at the Erie one).
See numbered notes below the first image. Numbered from top to bottom. :)

1. Brass B&O B18 4-6-0. Seller said Max Gray, another dealer later confirmed this, but I think it is a Katsumi imported by GHC. I have never bought any brass before, but couldnt pass this one up. Perfect size, classic look, that high-drivered mainline look, and a favored railroad that "connects" to mine. A rather severe splurge for me at $118 but I just got our yearly work bonus and the price seemed strikingly low for brass, even older brass. In fact, the same dealer had a lot of older brass; LMB, Akane, Gem, that sort of thing, at what seemed like very low prices: a NYC H-10b for $120, a B&O Mike for $120. You can't even touch plastic steam at that price; has the bottom completely fallen out of the brass market or what? Maybe I shoudl have offered less...

But still, a B18. If you are going to have one B&O loco for a small railroad that is the one to have. Built in 1901, rebuilt ~08 and ran until the 50s on branchline duty all over the place.

2. And on the other end of the spectrum, a Chattanooga 2-8-0 for $5. Seemingly it isn't a train show if I don't come back with at least one $5 Chatt. I have three of them so far plus the Mehano version...

3. And an amusingly large tender on absurd four-wheel trucks that was 50 cents. Posed with a Bach 2-6-0 I just got back from service, which needs a tender. Whatta ya think? ;)
Yeah, I think not. Will probably end up on my mehano Chattanooga.

4. A neat yellow loco from the Erie train show. $2, battery powered, but better detailed than most, and fits HO track. Looks Prussian or something.

5. A Riv passenger car that I traded an Athearn streamlined dome car for.

6. Three trolleys. A Tyco Nob Hill car, needing TLC, and a non-running Bachmann trolley from the Erie show, with a trailer from the Mentor show. I have no idea where I am going to run all these trolleys...

Now some more.

A pile of Penn Line heavyweights. Most need trucks. I will have to use some Zelda skills to fabricate them or something. $1 each and they look OK on 18" curves, and somehow the heavyweights arent quite as stubby-looking as the streamliners to my eyes. Love the open platform obs. :)

And finally, what would a train show excursion be without a random pile of junk that dealers threw in along with the good stuff:

The heavyweights are destined to be cut down into shorties. The Gowanda-Buffalo car is interesting; it's stamped metal. Walthers maybe? Will probably convert it into a coach.

Neat things I passed up were a rather worn out 0-4-2 (Athearn? Revell?) and a Flyer HO barrel loader (a bit more than I was willing to pay, at $18). I also considered a Japanese EF-66 B-B-B electric by Lima, but passed it up for other things (it was $15).

With regard to the Penn Line/Hobby Line "stubby" heavy weight cars. More recently these cars have been available from Life Like.

I picked up 6 shells a while ago (5 coaches and 1 combine) and intend to build a CNJ consist and have been doing some research. These cars were built by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation in Wilmington Delaware for many Northeastern railroads. (Shipbuilding? - that's a story for another day.)

This coach is not an exact replica, but is a reasonable representative of all steel coaches purchased by the Central New Jersey Railroad in the late 1920s. (BTW: they were still in use through the 1970s.) There’s a precedent for everything. Some modelers will turn their noses up at these models because these are “shorty” cars. The cars scale out to about 62 feet. The original cars were only 73 feet long, not the 80-85 feet we think of for a more modern car. They are only a little bit short.

Set them next to an Athearn of Rivarossi heavy weight car and you'll see what I mean. But in the real world, they were shorter!

I got floors/frames with them, but I too need to scare up some trucks.

Oh neat. Were these the coaches used for the "Blue Comet" then?

Edit: Cool, I was able to use the CNJ lead to discover more information as well as an equipment diagram. The Penn Line cars do look quite close!

I don't know if these were used for the Blue Comet. I had in mind the CNJ I remember from the 70s. When NJ Transit took over CNJ they were used for commuter service. At that time, they were painted dark blue with a yellow number board/stripe. They had the CNJ Statue of Liberty logo on one end and the NJ Transit logo on the other.

For those that don't know, the Blue Comet was a train that ran from the NJ side of the Hudson River (the CNJ terminal) to Atlantic City and down the Jersey Shore. This was in the 20s. The service ended with the Depression. The cars were lightish blue (for the ocean) with a tan (sand color for the beach) stripe. Of course part of its claim to fame was that Joshua Lionel used to ride it to the shore and it ended up as a Lionel Train Icon. As a bit of trivia, The Blue Comet was labeled only "The Blue Comet". No CNJ name or logos appeared on the cars. The car @ the Whippany Museum is a "tribute" to the Blue Comet paint, but does have the CNJ name and logo.

Possibly from Maisto's TT gauge trains

I went to a toy show last weekend
Bought a mess of diecast cars for $20
only saw 1 N scale loco for $40

I'd post my finds but no trains are in the pic

Also as of April 1st will have no job
So that means no trips for a while

Sure, I'll trade you the switcher for the Revell 0-6-0 if that works for you. The CN unit is too modern for my layout, but the 0-6-0 is right on. This is the 0-6-0 saddle tank, correct?

I checked it just now and the CN switcher appears to be an AHM unit made by Mehano. Three pole vertical open-frame AHM type side magnet motor, plastic worm and gear drive. It runs and the headlight works, though naturally being an AHM it's buzzy. The weight is included (I found it in the box) but one rear footboard is broken off and the screw is missing that should hold the shell to the top of the chassis. No couplers either.

LV, yes it is the same building. Atlas buildings many times came from other makers. I wonder if Atlas actually made it, or acquired from another producer.

TT:

I have a strong suspicion that you may be onto something with the British notion.

The Atlas Trainman interlocking looks nothing like a typical US tower, but it bears a strong resemblance to a GWR signal box. Ratio make a kit which is close, but not quite identical - the upper story windows are different.

I seem to recall that Model Power had some British and European looking kits in their product line for some time. I wonder if these two kits showed up in that line?

Went to an auction over the weekend and this guy must have gotten all the stuff I ever wanted from the JC Penney catalog as a kid - and then barely played with it.

At least five Tyco sets, although not a one in it's box, two Tyco and one Lionel slot car set in their boxes, a lot of stuff with the Catalog label still on it.

So I picked up:

E7 in NH and UP in the box
Chattanooga 2-8-0 in the box - most of the components of the original 1975 set were present, tank car, crane, caboose, etc. -

Amtrak GG1 in the box - plus two sets of the passenger cars, there was a set like this (I did not get the F7, another bidder did)

A batch of freight cars including two Sunoco chrome tanks, Gulf 3-dome long tank, crane and boom tender, ad cars Popsicle, Star-Kist, Old Dutch (boxcar), Boraxo hopper, Miller reefer, Coke big tanker, Pepsi boxcar, Cox Champion box car, and some others plus some more common stuff

Plus a batch of built up buildings, five complete kits including a rolling bridge and the Renwal coal loadter/unloader, and a batch of odds and ends.

Most of these things, while they were stored in a damp basement, are like brand new, no wheel wear or dirt at all. A couple things show signs of the damp, and the US1 set had a small mouse nest in the end of the box. But it also came with three extra trucks on top of the two in the set and has the airport in it.

I let some other folks have some of the less desirable pieces, a Santa Fe late shell F7, BN shark, Bicentennial C430, a couple Model Power locos, plus the auctioneer did it goofy, left one box out in the choice rounds, so I missed a couple good pieces of Model Power. Had to fight with a lady buying for her brother who has Lionel trains and said she had no idea what she was buying. But she paid more for a lot of it than I would have sold it for.

It's a half-trailer, and a container I guess from some Model Power or Cox set? Open to trades if you want to trade anything, neither the trailer nor the container is anything I can use.

They usually run $20-$30 range on e-bay, so that one is a bit cheaper then the others. I only paid $5 for each of the ones that i bought.

Going to do a rebuild on the two that i bought, under frame, brake gear, walkways, etc.

**well quite a find. looks like you cleaned someone out.

The lima or play art passenger set will run good for a long time. You got a good start with the B&O streamlined passenger set. Lots of nest stuff here and there.

** Lima usually made the Play Art set, and they didn't cheapen them up. They kept the quality up.

Well Saturday last May 7 2016 was the Allentown train show at Merchants Square Mall.
best stuff I got there was a Bowser Aero train set. Then a Walters Peanut car. A Gilbert Alco RSD5 demonstrator. Found a old HObbyline Seaboard railroad silver box car. It is like new. Not bad for a 60+ year old car.
