Ken for years they just weren't there. They were tucked away in peoples collections. In the recent year they became aviable at shows, at good prices. So when I have time. and everything I need for them, they all get painted and lettered at the same time. I might have as many as 5 sets. If set up right they will run in double sets, like the real ones. I have to get some castings made of the headlights that mount to both ends on the roof of the powered units, and pantographs. I also need to power a couple. frank

Frank - I like that ATSF tank car, and the Stewart loco looks interesting, have never had one of their locos. Also have never seen a "Bride & Groom" set before. I am assuming these are some kind of early RDC? Will have to do some researsh on those. Nice looking set though, thanks for posting.

While on a camping trip to PA on Thanksgiving (your Columbus Day) I went to an antique store in Wellsboro, PA and picked up these items.

I also got these 2 engines. I am still searching HO Seeker to try and determine what exactly the steam engine is. It's a Mantua is all I know at the moment. Trying to determine if it's a Pacific or a Hudson.

The switcher would not run when I tried it out but the motor would hum. I took it all apart and cleaned out all the lint and dog hair from the wheels and gear and found a track nail in the motor that was jamming the armature. Removed that and thoroughly cleaned the commutator and brushes and reassembled the engine. It runs nicely but sounds like an old hand turned egg beater when running, but from researching I guess that's the way they run.

The only difference between the Pacific and the Hudson is the trailing truck. Since you don't have a trailing truck yet, the engine is a Pacific if you can get a 2-wheel trailing truck and it's a Hudson if you can get a 4-wheel trailing truck.
I know that sounds flippant, but it's so.

About those Pacifics, you have a lot to learn about those things. The original one made between 1952 to around 1955 was all diecast with a bell above the headlight. From around 1956 to around 1958-1959ish, they put the bell on the boiler which is how they kept it for the rest of it's production life. After that, from around 1959-1960 to when Tyco got bought out by Consolidated Foods in the early 1970's, the Pacifics were metal except the cab and tender shell which appears to be the one you have. I believe they also changed the motor around this time. In the brown box era, they cheapened the loco even more like the rest of the lineup back then. The rest is most likely history.

Actually there is more to it than that. The motor mounting/drive gear couplings are different also. As this doesn't have a motor I am having to check closely for other details to determine exactly what it is.

I apologize, I'm still kinda new to Mantua as well as you apparently are so yeah. Is there any chance you can post every angle of the locomotive to this forum so we can help with identifying it?

For one thing, that blue 4-6-2 is Gordon from Thomas The Tank Engine (I watched the show when I was little. ) and second of all, the green 4-6-2 is a Hornby Flying Scotsman that looks much like mine. Except older, of course.

Yeah, I know that as well. I read some of the original stories when I was little too.

"A lot of modellers out there who go to these train shows see broken HO stuff and go, 'This is useless' when, in reality, they can still be used for modeling whether it's as a prop on your layout or a cool project to make something old new again."

Went to Brockton's annual train show today, and here's what I picked up...

TYCO log dump car set, lighted bumper, traffic lights and signs; Athearn SW9 Santa Fe diesel, Life-Like Proto 2000 Santa Fe GP9, another Santa Fe dummy engine (missing a truck), Kadee uncoupling magnet, and some new rolling stock.
Also got a box of these with stuff that I'm mostly donating to the model train museum I mentioned...
(I was told the locomotives won't run.)

There was a recent train show at Allentown Pa. It was the first frost train show. I was lucky enough to find these trains at a very reasonable price. You can see there are no $150. locomotives here with DCC and sound. Just a pair of Athearn GP7, from different dealers. A ATT. Little Miner 2-2-0. It is missing a main rod and the screw to hold it on so cost less. Some Gilbert pieces, three. Three Revell, and a Fleischmann car. Also a old Mantua Sinclair tank car. The last a old plastic Mail car and a coach modeled from the 1850 to 1860 time period. A model that if properly put together can be used a period layout. ** Good luck in your searches for that great addition to your trains. ** frank
