Your double-tank wooden vinegar car is the Ambroid Richter Vinegar car. Cool find, still looking for one of those myself.
Oh, and the Heinz vinegar car is one of the original Strombecker kit that I'll soon be getting in the mail from chevelle454, can't wait to build it!

Thanks to a hot tip from RP Model Railroads, I nabbed this off eBay for $20. Now where the heck to put it!
Latest research by Jack Horner, PhD, emeritus, is that this beast was likely a scavenger, bird like, and did not tower on its hind legs, but rather moved slowly, but surely, in a posture parallel to the terrain.
It is a bonafide Tyco product, BTW.

Did Dr. Horner sit in the corner when he revealed that gem of prehistoric knowledge? I'm plumb curious about that. Sorry, I just couldn't resist.

Very punny, Sccshaggy! You're right on the money! I'm a poet, hope I don't blow it!
Actually, Dr. Horner found his first fossil at the age of 8- a chunk of vertebrae off some extinct creature. He made his other discoveries tediously bent over with a small dust brush whisking away grains of dirt. How anyone can peform such tedium year in year out is beyond me. I'd soon take a pick ax to it. Which is why I'm not a paleontologist, I guess. His remarkable gift is discerning the faint outline of a thing in the ground and knowing mineralized fossil apart from a chunk of stone.
Another thing of interest to me is that in all of paleontology there have been maybe a dozen T Rexes ever found. Dr. Horner is a soft spoken guy, who is profoundly dyslexic, and flunked out of college more than once because of it, and because dyslexia wasn't known, much less understood, in his rural Montana youth. People thought he was lazy or stupid. How he achieved his doctorate and his spell binding knowledge of geology is a feat in and of itself. The other remarkable thing, is that for all his knowledge, he doesn't speak in scientific gobbledy gook, but in very plain, and illustrative adjectives.
It stuns me how people can overcome great obstacles and achieve brilliance. Myself, I'm just a shake-the-box, RTR Tyco kind of chap. Thank heavens for the Tyco Forum!

I've heard that when the straight A students to whom it all comes easily finally run into a big obstacle, it's especially hard because they've never learned to struggle. Guys like Dr. Horner, who've always had to struggle just to keep even, very likely have the grit and determination to rise to the top of their game.
I read once that determination is the common thread running through self-made millionaires and that 41% of them come from below the poverty line. Only 14.5% of the population is below the poverty line, so this suggests that the school of hard knocks is still graduating some pretty sharp alumni.

I'm working in the NE US (PA,NJ,NY) on a project. I have most weekends free so I have been attending the big antique swap meets and markets. I also check out the better, older train shops. I've found lots of great items the past two weekends. I cannot pass up a good deal!

When my pal Tinplate Henry woke me up from dozing away after a night shift, and told me he was cleaning out his garage, and would I like some old stuff, I flew out of the rack and dashed over to his place. Including these great finds, I got to meet his new grand daughter and examine his breathtaking Pre War collection additions.

oh I love the GN caboose Plus I don't think Tyco ever put out a Sky Blue GN caboose Considering that scheme only lasted a few years b4 the great BN Mega Merger of 1970
I can imagine a Tyco caboose in that Sky Blue scheme tho
forgot to ask what the logs are made of

microbuss,
The logs appear to be wood dowels coated with material to simulate bark. Other than being perfectly straight and round, I think that they are pretty realistic for the mid-1960s time period.

Great stuff! I thought about going to Timonium today as I had to work yesterday. It's a three hour trip each way and I need to rest after this 96 hour long work week. Also, I'm sure the good buys are gone by now. Hmmm,I need to call the guy who says he has a footlocker full of old 50's HO.

I did get put to some flea markets this afternoon.
Here's what I found. The Dairyman's League Reefer is a factory error. Was never painted green on the ends and roof. Has no signs or trace of ever been painted green. I've seen car this before 25-30 years ago. It was a Mantua Kit. I was also excited to find a Monon Hopper with the ROOF!
The Penn Line Super Dome is nice! Both of the work train crew cars are complete!

S scale boxcar. Handbuilt but with weird production techniques that make me think it's got to be a pre-production manufacturer's prototype or mockup.

Sides are a slab of plastic with scribed weld lines, but steps are cut out with teh sides and left filled-in. Ends appear to be milled from thick plastic but with rib spacing slightly off. Trucks are AF with glued-in plastic-turned kingpins. Ends, roof, and underframe are unpainted gray plastic. Fully decorated only on one side...other side has no lettering.
It really has that "mockup" look about it, but I can't for the life of me figure out what company might have made it. As far as I know, Flyer never had such a car...the Lionel waffle side one is the closest I can find but this has smooth sides.
Bought for $5 out of a box of low-end tinplate Marx and Lionel Scout stuff that was being sold "as a set" for $100...the seller agreed that it didn't look to be part of the set.
Any ideas?

My 2nd semester of Senior year is awesome -- only 1 live class and 1 asynchronous class have granted me so much more time to dedicate to the layouts.
This afternoon, my Dad and I visited the Nicholas Smith Train Store in Broomall, PA and as always, I was pleased to get some great deals. Below are my finds:

Highlights include:
- MRC "copper" RAILINE 370 powerpack ($15.00) - Tyco "Red Box" Dupont Chemical tanker for only $7.00 - Snickers car for only $6.00

Apologies for the delay as I've been very busy this week, but here's my finds from the New Hope Train Show last Sunday. As luck would have it I was able to come back from Pittsburgh to visit family this week, and in time for the show as well.

- Ambroid MEC 70' pulpwood car, unstarted kit. - Red Ball PRR R50 express reefer. Found it as an unopened kit but I couldn't resist getting started! I've been trying to snag one of these for several months. It's the only way to get a correct PRR express reefer that's not plastic. - Ulrich twin hopper, Erie. Built horribly, had to dismantle the whole thing. - Binkley New Haven boxcar. Incomplete kit, but in its original box for $1 why not - Athearn metal boxcar, NYC Pacemaker. Built crooked and will need to be dismantled and rebuilt but I needed this roadname. - Mantua Big Six. In desperate need of new paint but runs great. - Varney metal flatcar, GN - earlier version of Red Ball 36' DC flatcar - original Silver Streak 4 wheel caboose - Varney card side express reefer, repainted tuscan - rare Roundhouse all-metal triple hopper, UP, in gorgeous condition - Mantua card side tanker, Valvoline - Ambroid Von Allmen Pickle Car, roof is damaged but it was only $1 and easy to repair - mystery brass industrial critter. Iirc Sean has another one like it. Beyond that I don't know a thing about it - Penn Line GG1. Got it for its first-gen all-metal frame and running gear--the shell is surplus, as my friend and I will be scratchbuilding a New Haven EP3 from wood and brass on top of the GG1 guts. The real GG1 was actually based on the EP3 and used the same running gear. - not shown: a big ziploc of random rolling stock parts. The vendor I got the GG1 and industrial critter from also insisted on giving me a big plastic tub of parts. Sorted it out and put the useful 1/2 of its contents in a bag.
EDIT: forgot these:

- Athearn pocket catalog, early 50s. - Star Line billboard kit. One of the smallest pre-war structure kits there was. Brand new! - Pioneer "searchlight" dwarf signal. Never seen anything like this before. Apparently, to install it you mount a lightbulb under the layout surface, mount the red/green cellophane holder over that and attach to a lever to switch indications, and then the signal itself is lit by a bent glass rod that acts as a sort of fiber-optic, with the bottom pointed down over the colored cellophane. A very strange device. Considering the box says "HO-OO-S" I suspect it is also pre-WWII.

Nice grabs, Frank & PRR.
Who makes those tiny switchers and do they run any good, or do they only go 120 MPH? Are they inclined to cut out on switches?

Frank,
I think your brass critter was made by Precision Models, Philadelphia, in the 1950's. I have one in the original box buried somewhere in my train room.
