Hi Ken, sometimes ranting is good for you. It is better than keeping it bottled up inside. I have been through the "stripping ordeal". I think I started with brake fluid and it did work fairly well until I left some "yellow box" Atlas, GP-40 shells in it for too long and ended up with plastic putty.

I switched to "ELO" and it worked pretty well but it seemed like I was being fumed to death while I was working with it. I have experimented with Pine-Sol, 90% alcohol and other concoctions that I have read about. I finally ended up with some stuff called "Scalecoat II; Wash Away". It works the best for me so far and doesn't seem to be trying to gas me to death while near it.

Things here in the US are the same. The tree huggers have put a stop to everything that worked well. Most good old solvent based paint is gone. I also believe that something evil has happened to Microscale decals. I used to be able to do all kinds of things with them. Now, they seem to be so brittle that you cannot get them off of the paper without cracking.

Just put it all in perspective; "a bad day in the train room beats a good day at work anytime".

I think rubbing alcohol works well. The stronger the better. Not sure what proof, but the closer to pure the better.

Spray the decals with clear paint before trying to use them?

Microscale decal film works pretty good to rescue old brittle decals. Use a couple of coats.

As for stripping, I use 91% alcohol. Some finishes are more resistant than others, and need a day or two total soak time. Some come off almost instantly. But...if the finish is an enamel base, the alcohol won't touch it.

A whole week in 91% alcohol and an hour of nostril-burning scrubbing barely touched the paint on this one damn Bachmann boxcar shell. Is it just bachmann or did I do something wrong?
