A pair of Athearn F7's that I repainted for the L&N. They called them "Black Cats".

Thanks ben - they were painted black to try not to offend the coal operators they served, believe it or not. This was in the era when coal-fired steam was being phased out. They were initially used as booster or pusher sets (I think configured A-B-B-B-A) in the Kentucky and Virginia mountains. I'll add a few B units soon.

Why would seeing diesels seen as offensive to the coal mine operators?

Because they burn diesel fuel instead of coal - and coal locomotives burned a LOT of coal. The diesel era put an end to that.

The same reason the miners today do not like our current president. His policies will cost them their jobs.
Many of the early freight diesels were black, because back then everybody knew freight power was black. Everybody knew fire trucks were red. Duh! Just the way it was.
Those are fine looking F7s! Great paint job, I envy the quality of your work.

My LOTW:
A Varney Lil Joe:

It was sold with a gold Globe F&, powered by a Varney power truck, purchased just yesterday for ~$50. Not a bad price considering the Joe has the valve gear.

Back to non-coal power <cough!> , here's a CN Shark I posted to our 'Zealander poster as well. Figured I might as well get a 2-for-1 deal here today. Made by ROCO, I haven't tried running it yet, I may try it on my test track this morning on my workbench in the basement. I intend to start testing and running more of my locos , since my wife is on me about "all my engines"...sigh. Anyhow, a nice clean example of a shark in my collection.

Jerry, did your wife ever say how many engines she thought was appropriate? That was a big topic of discussion around our house a few years ago when I was at about 600 loco's.

OH MY. Seems to be a recurring theme among wives for some reason Since I'm "only" at 75 locomotives, I'd say 600 would be about right! Actually the current treaty calls for limiting my total pieces (locomotives+rolling stock) to under 500, which is only about 75 away.
BTW Jerry - very nice looking Shark . I have yet to add one to my own roster. The Rocos I have are very quiet, smooth runners.

I may have a hundred locomotives, but the wife thinks that is WAY too many. I have never actually counted , as I keep acquiring, and haven't documented every one yet. So I'll say 100 locos, and maybe 200? cars. It will be a recurring battle for awhile, she's stressed out over things in her life.
I tried my CN Shark this morning, got a headlight, but no noise or movement, so will take it apart tonight to see what's up with it internally. Broken wire, no contact, motor locked, will find out.

Frame to my ho replica of the Folsom Prison #1. Still got a long way to go but I'll be doing everything I can to make it look like she did in the 60's.

Oh my... I'm closing in on 550 or 600 cars (can't find them all to count them), and at last count had about 90 locos and have gotten at least 10 since. But instead of a wife, I have PARENTS to complain at me for letting them take over the house!
