Hi Everyone,
I just got a box of trains and I know nothing about them, no idea what they are worth and I do not want to sell them if they may be worth some $$. I have looked and prices seem to be all over the place from $20 to $500 but could not find any the same as some of the ones I have. This one I just took a picture is HO by Lionel, come in its box but box in bad shape, train seems to be in great shape. Only numbers I see on the box is 0596-1 and the numbers on the train are 0596 and new york central. Please tell me anything you can about this, how old it is and what it mat be worth etc. (trying to post photo but not sure if they posted)

No, your picture didn't upload. Anyway, here's a site that lists the set as # 5727, is that like yours? http://www.guidetozscale.com/html/1959_lionel_h0_sets.html
Value all depends. HO Lionel is not as sought-after like O gauge, but they do bring good prices depending on the type of set. The NASA space set is very valuable. Not sure the NYC is even close to that. You'll just have to keep digging for nuggets of info on the internet, for value. Good luck! It's at least worth $75 if everything <set wise ) is near mint other than the main big box, I'd say. Since it's a very early Lionel HO set, it is probably worth more than that, all depending of course. I have no idea myself.

Determining worth from a collectible perspective is very difficult. Find the right person who is looking for those particular pieces and it can be worth a lot. But that is the challenge. Does the locomotive run? Some pure collectors might not care, but those that also run their trains might. And believe it or not the box condition itself is of vital importance to some. For myself, the method I use is to visit auction sites such as ebay, try to find items I have and then see what prices they bring. But...like you said, even then the prices for identical pieces can vary across the board - depending on the market on that particular day. For example, I went to one auction site who had that same piece - it was starting the auction at $20 and gave the expected range as $20-$200. You might think that's good info, but really the same can be said of ANY HO locomotive. Most that are in decent condition and run will sell on average for around $20, and the rarer and hard-to-find can push that number up in a hurry if someone is looking for it for a long time, finds it and has to have it. Anyway, as Jerry said - keeping digging on the internet for info and Good Luck. It can be a very fickle market.

Lionel HO has kind of passed as the hot collectible. Only mint pieces in decent original boxes bring much money now.
The 0596 is a GP7 made in 1959, sold separately and in set number 5727. While the guide says scarce I've run across a number of examples, I just bought a rough one as part of a $15 box lot.
If you need to put a value on it for insurance purposes, Greenberg's Guide to Lionel HO Vol.1 would do it, although the figures in there often have little bearing on what things actually sell for say on eBay.
