I have too many projects!

as my brother winds down on his< I am picking mine up. Yesterday I recieved my second IHC/Tyco SD-24 so now the "older" (1970's era) PE locomotives will be started on here's my queries:

I have to check if I still have my dual shaft motors but if not, who remembers the "cheap" replacement motor on the bay?

and second does anyone know which model NWSL flywheels would be the best replacement? (somehow I think my LHS is gonna act all stupid since it's not a "high end" loco!)

Now, as far as adding weight (it is light) I have that covered by buying some cerrobend, which is a low tempreature melting lead, I'll need the weight as these critters will be assigned the grain train duties which means they will be going up and down a grade....A LOT!

just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader

Too many projects... tell me about it.

You'll definitely need the extra weight. I had to tie a string to mine to keep it from floating away. I bought it cheap to swap the trucks with an IHC single-motored GG1, because they only had 4 powered axles, while the SD24 had 6. (A sidelined project. btw.)

The stock motor isn't bad, and the speed can be cut in half with Atlas Alco worms. Problem is the seller who had them on eBay doesn't anymore. I searched Kato's site, and the 961500 worm set might be a match.

I wonder how hard it would be to just slip an Atlas/Roco SD24/SD35 chassis under one?

The original Mabucchi motor has 2mm shafts. So any flywheel with a 2mm bore diameter should fit fine. As Nelson mentioned, the original motor is actually quite good. I replaced the original worms with Kato worms and the speeds dropped. I kept the original motor. I also added 6oz of lead just to keep the loco on the rails!

I will try to swap the IHC chassis with an old Atlas chassis in the morning.

well my weight came in today, a pound of cerrobend so now the weight issue will be dealt with now the hunt for flywheels and a universal gear set, thinking of just seeing what athearn stuff I have in the parts box will work...

The Athearn parts that attach to the motor shaft and worm will not fit most can motors or worm shafts. 2mm is the most common size for those shafts. I don't recall the exact size, but Athearn blue box locos had motor and worm shafts that were quite a bit larger.

I did dig up some parts you can look for. These all fit 2mm shafts:
A-Line ball couplings #12054
A-Line brass flywheels #20021 (for switchers, 3/4" dia. 3/8" long)
A-Line brass flywheels #20006 (for larger road units, 21/32" dia. 11/16" long)
NWSL brass flywheel (16mm dia. 8mm long)

The A-Line flys come in pairs and cost me $10 per pair. The NWSL flys cost $4 per flywheel, but are fairly small and light. These are retail prices from my local hobby shop. You can probably get them all much cheaper on ebay.

Athearn motor shafts are 1/8", and the worm shafts are 2.4mm, IIRC.
