ok kiddies new brain buster
not really thinking of doing this (unless my rivarossi C630 rebuild goes to crap)
is there a way of mounting a decoder into a PT unit?
all the other forums I've seen this of course they say this
A) take Tyco engine
B) throw in trash
C) buy compatable newer unit DCC equipped
now where's the fun in that?
just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader

As long as you isolate both brushes, it should work just fine. I would try to mount the DCC decoder at the top of the shell.

PT's are DCC-able, and there have been threads about how to do it somewhere on this forum. You need to replace the screw that holds down the grounded brush retainer with a Kadee nylon screw to isolate the motor. They don't draw that much current, but I don't know the stall current offhand.

Yes, the brush plate cover screws are metal, they need to be replaced with either nylon or Delrin screws ( plastic may melt, if the motor gets hot enough), and that will isolate the motor from the frame connections. I still intend to do a Tyco GG1 this way, maybe over the winter.
