I thought I would start out with a project that I have been wanting to do for sometime. Living in SoCal, I see a lot of trains with military load. I am about 1.5 hours from Camp Pendelton and about 2 hours from the Logistics base at Yermo. I have always wanted to model what I saw, especially armor units coming back from Iraq. Besides model railroading, I also built 1/71 1/35 armor and planes so this allowed me the opportunity to merge both my hobbies. Here is my first addition to the series:

Here are 2 M-1 Abrams fresh from a tour in Iraq. For variation, I painted one in the Euro paint scheme. The decals are of some 1/72 scale vehicles that I didn't use. The tanks are Herpa and the flat is an athearn. I need to do some research but some chains are in order.

I got this T-72 for a couple of bucks at my LHS. It was assembled by its previous owner but never painted. I wanted this to be my trophy tank, represented a captured unit returned to the states for evaluation. I have a T-62 somewhere that will also be painted but was thinking of painting that in traditional Warsaw Pac colors.

Thanks John. I too want to do a WW2 era military train. I already purchased some halftracks and will be buying some shermans. I model 2 eras so those are next on the list. In fact, the half tracks are assembled and ready fro paint.

As far as locos, this is the lot I am working on.
NONE ran at time of purchase. I already have the UP PA/PB combo so their future is uncertain though I am heavily leaning on converting those to Pensy units with those cool roof antennas. The B&O PA/PB combo will be restored and I already have the FP-45 in B&O so that might be converted into a Wisconsin Central Unit. I always wanted that Mantua F unit so it will be restored and the steamer....well lets just say a paintjob is in its future.

Checkout the guts of this engine.

Athearns are amazing units but even they can't run when their parts are so "bent out of shape". Luckily the motor is in good shape.

Mantua F Unit time:

Wow! I think this person bathed with their engines.
Luckily a pretty worn out Gp-20 with a good motor (not much else) stepped in as a Donor engine.

Back on track and ready to go.
The motor runs super quiet, crawls and pulls very well.
1 down...the rest to go.

Ray, being in the military logistics field for over 20 years now I have extensive knowledge of rail transport, if you have any questions feel free to ask!
One note on the M-1 tank, they are too heavy for a "normal" flat when fully equipped (only stripped down for depot rebuild is ok) usually they are mounted on 6 axle flats as they weigh 56 tons "dry weight" (sans ammo and additional accessories)
just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader

Thanks for the offer Ray. I will make sure to ask. Yes I suspected that the M-1s were far too heavy for my setup. I also was going to build them without the .50 cal and other machine guns given that they are removed during transport. They just look so much better with them on though.

Sad thing is, the only company that does a DODX heavy flat makes it as a flat brass kit and I can't find six axle roller bearing trucks for the life of me!
Although, you can cut down the accurail flat to a 57 footer (yes they are 57 feet, go figure) to make a good representation. DODX HD flats are numbered in the 404xx series.
Somewhere I have the field manual on rail transport ill see if I can find it this weekend for ya if your interested.

Nice work on the tanks! Those motors on Tyco engines are almost indestrucible.... Clean the oxidation off of the wheels a few drops of light oil on the gears and it is ready to run.... I have had only one where I found the armature brunt out.....

Cool project you have going! That's a great selection of engines as well. You've got a really nice example of the Tyco Burlington F. I believe the B&O PB is somewhat scarce as well.
