When I was littler I had the bright idea to try my hand at "weathering" things with sharpie marker. Most of my experiments I wouldn't care about except one perfectly good Roundhouse gondola that I'd like to reclaim. More recently I've been using acrylic paints for my weathering, and though I usually get good results there are some things I wish I hadn't painted.
So, anyone have any idea how to remove Sharpie or acrylic paint WITHOUT removing the factory finish?

Try using lighter fluid. You can use it to remove ink from clothes and I used to use it to remove permanent marker from RC lexan bodies. I've never seen it harm paint as of yet, but try it where no one will notice it first.

That business of "licking it" is an interesting solution; might be good to follow-up with a photo/video posting on the technique.

You might want to pick up a large (gallon) container of Super Clean at WalMart in the automotive cleaning supplies aisle. It is in a purple colored container and I use it to remove all sorts of old acrylic and enamel paints and decals and dirt. It is "green-friendly" and not harmful, but wear gloves anyway. This is the same solution you find in Castrol Wheel Cleaner and similar products (licensed to them by Super Clean and just relabeled). I think the large container costs under $5.00 and will last quite a while.

I use it in plastic Glad storage containers or similar food containers (cleaned) from Boston Market, etc. Use it on a one-time soaking basis for each cleaning, and throw out the soiled remainder in the sink (remember- green friendly), then wash the model with dish soap and water to remove the solution residue.

I use it as a prep for all the models you see me post on this forum- some are old paint jobs from 20+ years ago that I pick up at train swap meets- so this stuff is pretty effective.

To do the early, industrial strength licking, put the residue from a tuna can on the model and give it to a cat. Their tongues are rougher than ours and will cut the paint and ink faster.

Then when the bulk of the cleaning is done, smear peanut butter on it and set it outside. Chipmunk tongues are smaller than ours and will reach into all the nooks and crannies. Remember: the strength of a human is to recognize the superior strength of the other animals and put it to work for the betterment of Man.

" INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH" licking! Say . . . there's an idea. And the chipmunks to get the detail. Don, once again, your voice of experience . . . well . . . it's just a God-send.

This. ^ Alcohol goes right through permanent ink, 91% is even better. Just watch the paint as it can remove some factory paints as well, but not quickly. Just limit the exposure time.

Well considering that Jerry made the "licking" suggestion nearly a year ago, if you followed the suggestion then, it should have worked by now!
