Refreshed for PowerStreet 10-20-08 Refreshed 9-29-10 for inmatt88 I have been collecting Silver Streak locomotives for past two years. I own a fleet of them. I just recently purchased one that is mint in box and never ran and is missing the UP logo on front which appears to be factory goof as there is no evidence of the sticker ever being there or removed and there is no residue or blemishes on finish which would be evident if removed . I rate this locomotives finish a 10 as it is mirror & no flaws. The wheels are clean and shiney. I tested the motor and it purrs. See photos below.

Brian,
I'll bet it runs sweet with a little bit of a whine and slotcar-like performance. Probably has pretty good slow speed operation and fresh traction tires too.
We need to talk more Tyco around here. I need to respond to fave Tyco post.

It's the Shine...
These Silver Streak trains came out about the same time HotWheels came out with their Silver & Yellow Chrome Cars.
Imagine how much beef the loco would be if it was actually shined metal! [:P] just drooling at the glitter.... [}:)]

Thanks for the comments--not hoarding-l-o-l. I am obsessed with the streak. Here are some better pics of the mint chrome finish. I was lucky the other week and won another just like the one pictured but it has the UP seal and is mint never touched-no finger smudges etc!! Both came in what appears to be factory clear plastic bag sleeve as it is length of loco.
UpDate = 9-28-08-- I now have 4 of these mint in my collection--Scored 2 back to back earlier this year

Ken--Thank You. I saved a few for you to purchase--L-O-L. Haven't bought all yet--L-O-L. It is very rare to get one of these mint-untouched/used and i wanted everyone to see what they look like new Gleaming. Would have been nice if these could have been done in mirror Stainless steel

Liquid metal, for sure. If I can find one like that someday, I'll give it the painted handrail treatment, like so:

I've sure seen a lot of quality variation in the chrome from part to part. I don't know if it correlates with production date or what. Seems like red-roof models are more apt to have rough chrome. Anyone else noticed the same?

Power street--Thank you for your comment. Glad you enjoyed the view.
OKC -- I am helping to get his Silver streak up and running
bkoch -- cool handrail treatment. Did you paint the rails by hand?

The handrails are airbrushed in two steps. First I paint the individual parts before assembly. That insures that every surface is covered. They always get a little scraped during installation, so once they are on the loccmotive I mask everything off and spray them again. Check out my post from Oct 5 to see some nice white handrails on a GT 430. I sprayed those first with flat white, then a final coat of gloss white to get complete coverage of the black stanchions.
Here's a trio of 430's (same GT) with painted handrails:

yo BT If you look at the one without the UP herald the top is chromed While the one with the UP herald has a red stripe on the top So there is differences & I don't believe it's a factory error

MB There were 2 versions of the SS made - one has chrome roof and one has red roof = The oddity of the one above is that it came from Factory without UP herald - Only one known to exist as i have seen no other to date

Just pulled my Silver Streak out of storage to show my 5 and 10 year old boys what Daddy used to play with before there was such a thing as Playstation, Wii, and Nintendo DS! It hadn't run since I was a kid 30 years ago. But I loved the train and was determined to get it running before Christmas for them ...and me!!! I can still remember the old Silver Streak train commercials on TV!!! After setting up some track and attaching the transformer it worked, albeit pretty slowly at first. It seems like it could run more smoothly as the speed is somewhat erratic running in a circle and the starts are pretty jerky and sometimes require a nudge. I cleaned the track and trucks with alcohol and some 1000 grit sand paper (track only). That helped but I'm wondering what needs to be lubricated and with what sort of lubricant? Also wondering if the transformer should be upgraded although I am getting 18 volts with my multimeter... Any tips or recommendations for getting the old girl 100% would be appreciated!
By the way, my 5 year old loves the train and can't stop talking about playing with it ...my 10 year old couldn't care less!!!

After that long, the best thing is to totally disassemble it and clean it of all old grease, there's probably hair and carpet thread wrapped around the wheel axles and gears ( I've pulled apart PT motors, and found hair under the gears, clogging it up and slowing it down. ). The grease has probably hardened up, and needs alcohol removal, then reapplication of white grease, or lithium grease, either should be ok with the plastic. For oiling the bronze armature shaft bearings, I use Hob-E-Lube HL661 , or a Labelle oil will work. Don't go using 3-in-1 or any other generic oils, they're not formulated for electrical use. Buy the proper oils and lube, and you'll be ok. White grease can be bought just about anywhere. The oil you should go to a hobby store to get, or buy online. Other things to look over are the armature copper pads, may need cleaning ( alcohol 70-90% ) and Q-tip swabs ( be careful of the cotton hair! ). Clean out the joints between the pads, too, they build up the metal coming off the brushes, and will short it out, or lower resistance and it will run slower and overheat more.
Glad you got at least one young'un hooked, may not last long, but worth trying, anyway.

KDNitz - In addition to AMC reply - make sure the brass wheels are clean and shiney also - you can use the 1000 grit or even 500 emery cloth sandpaper to polish wheels without damaging the wheels.

Thanks guys! Does the body just snap off or is it glued in places that might cause it to crack if it don't slice through the glue? Also, should the original transformer be sufficient or should I upgrade in the event I want to add more track (i.e. at what point is the stock transformer not powerful enough to supply a given amount of track length)???
