Finally after 3 years of searching I've found and purchased the #1 engine I've been looking for. #1 on the list, my dream engine The Mantua Conrail shifter.
You may be wondering why I like such a weird, fake, and oddball engine. And to be honest I just love the weird, the unusual, the fake or fictional roadnames or paint schemes, just love it. For the last 3 years I've been trying to find this rare Mantua shifter. I'm not lying when I say it's very rare, only made 1980-1981. In the last 3 years alone I've never come across one at a train show and only 2 on ebay. Both of which sold for over $50.

So how did I come across this one? By accident........a friend of mine had told me he couldn't find any mantua 3 axle truck tenders usually found on the Mantua 2-8-2 and 4-6-2s, by them selves. I found that to be completely malarkey so I jumped on ebay and typed in HO tender, hit search, and the first result? The Conrail shifter...........at that point my jaw practically hit the floor.....Was newly listed at the time for $45 Buy it Now. I couldn't believe it, the engine I had never found after weekly searching for the past 3 years magically appeared under no notice....

So of course I wasn't going to ignore it, watched it for about 3 days and noticed it got no watchers. How, or why? Poorly listed. So after 3 days I said alright enough waiting, pulled the trigger and bought the thing!

So now I can cross off #1 on the list, FINALLY!! And now my Conrail steam collection is 75% complete! Got 2 of the 3 Conrail steamers ever produced, the AHM A-3 0-4-0 and now the Mantua shifter 0-4-0. So what's left? The AHM Conrail 4-6-2

Now I'm on the hunt for lokies #2 and 3 on the list ;) Hooker Chemical booster, it's orange you can't miss it. And the Navy little six. The hooker chemical booster is gonna be the hardest one to find. I see the Navy 0-6-0 from time to time.

1 down 2 to go!!

I buy, repair, and collect

Hi SCVR66,

Congrats on the find! It's a great feeling when you find a #1 list item.

Mine would be the Tyco Amtrak F unit at the moment, but it changes, LOL.

Thanks for sharing.

Boy, I had that Navy Little Six in my hand today. A guy who does the local shows has one. Fairly high priced IIRC, but he's reasonable to deal with.

Congratz on the find! It's funny how certain things have these ways of sneaking up on you when you least expect it. I have a few engines that have done that to me.

I almost thought I was seeing things.... It's like really? I've spent the better part of 3 years trying to search and find it, and the time where I'm not searching for it I find it......Lets just say I'm glad my friend had no luck finding a mantua tender
Which was complete malarkey by the way, those things are everywhere

That is a rare one, Phil. I've never seen that version before. It looks like it was first offered in '81, based on the catalogs on Tony's site.

I love that Davenport in D&RG, too.

Had no idea it was anything special or anyone would want it. PM me and let me know what's too much to spend on it.
