I was at a swap meet last weekend and found this old Mantua B&M 40 ft box car. Close inspection reveals a really crappy printing job on the B&M logo and I need to put Kadees on it, as well as my standard IM metal wheels.
How old is this one? It has nmra couplers and the underframe is all metal, with four plastic posts at the corners where the shell fits onto the underframe. The top and bottom door guides are metal, as well.
I think it may have been a train set item, from it's printing quality.
My idea would be to completely rebuild, starting with a repaint and improved decals- or is there some substantive "antique-ness" I am missing with this one?

siouxlake - interesting I picked up a nearly identical Mantua box car about a month ago at a local train show, except it's printed for L&N. Someone had already converted it to Kadees, I put some metal wheelsets on it. True the printing is not razor sharp, and it's hard to compare it to yours from the photo you posted - but I like its character. It has a nice old patina to it and I don't want to mess with it. I like the old stuff that look like they have been around the block a few times and have some history to them, the lack of prototypical detail and sharpness doesn't bother me that much. As for its "antique-ness" ... only you can decide that. I'd say personal opinion if you look at it and bugs you, have at it. Paer of the fun with this hobby is taking something and making it better to suit you.
