I just wanted to highlight four youtubes by various modelers that show some excellent 0-4-0s in operation. I'm always amazed at seeing 0-4-0s that work this smoothly.

That's some nice stuff, the Mantua 0-4-0 I think I just got that shell today in the mail with a "lot" of other engines. Never seen that one before, until twice today. Pretty cool. I may have to try that NWSL re-gear on one of my Rivarossi 0-4-0's.

Those YouTube videos are great, but there is no way I can duplicate the excellent craftsmanship manifest in them. If anybody saw me struggling to rewire my Bachmann 4-4-0 and add new pickups, the reason would be clear.
If I had done things right, I would have held out for Mantua/Tyco 4-4-0 Generals and 4-6-0's and my 4-8-0. The Bachmann's are just a little shy in the sturdy department, but I'm just not up to remotoring it. Someday, maybe I'll get somebody to do it for me, but for now, I'll just have to make do with the transistor throttles I use on the S scale SHABBONA RR. Speaking of which, I need to run some trains and take a break from the backshop work.
I see the photo of my 0-4-0 didn't show up on COTW. The engineer and fireman have tied up the conductor and resumed checking their trot lines, so maybe I can get another photo before they see what I'm doing.

More on my reply last night on those locomotive videos. About fifteen years ago, the speed control on my Dremel went out, and I replaced it with a common room light dimmer from the hardware store. It has been working flawlessly ever since.
Last night, after I posted that reply, I decided to see what it would do if I tried putting it between the plug in and the el cheapo throttle I've been using to test the Bachmann 4-4-0. Guess what? I got beautiful, transistor-like throttle response! By manipulating the Dremel speed controller, I can make that 4-4-0 CRAWL!. So there's an idea for those who can't afford all the latest electronic trickery; just put a room light dimmer ahead of your DC throttle and have locomotive performance like the best, but without the cost.
