Cool Ken. Keep the pictures coming as the project moves along. I dig seeing what other folks are doing and how they're doing it. Thanks. Barry

Nice work, Ken - maybe I'll post a photo of one of my S scale Santa Fe style cabooses for the group to throw brickbats at. In your case, you can throw an alarm clock; that's what you throw at a cat on a fence in the middle of the night anyway, isn't it?
Incidentally, my late sister once traced our ancestry back to english royalty, but I've never turned up on the Queen's will. Maybe if the designated ancestor hadn't run off with a coachman. . .

Ken, It should have window "frames" why not add aluminum paint to them to show it had been "updated" to a slightly newer form and have the windows replaced? Which painting just the window frames will add a slight bit more dimension....I'd also suggest some window screens, but those might be difficult to make, (I have a way) but to sure you can get the type stuff, on the other side of the big pond, but its almost like nylons, only has a larger open airy-ness to it.....AND its white-ish, that can be stained (sort of) with acrylic silver paint.....OR blackened much the same way with water based black paint.....WITHOUT, clogging the texture of that material.

Sadly, I don't have pictures of the window screens but, when I do, I'll be sure to post......I have yet to make any but I found a material to make them from and have to put my work where my brain is.....
Your picture above is what I would know as "Expanded Steel"

Andy, I have to agree with Ken! All it takes is some practice. Find yourself something "junk" and spray it, and continue to do so till your comfortable doing it, and the more you do, the feel of it will become easier as time passes. Some of us, its second nature....
You working with a spray can, or an air brush? I may have some pointers on either as I use both!

Ken, What red you have planned? I ask as that should look really good on the green car as a "stand out" detail, and will (providing the shade of red) look like a treated steel frame around the window that will represent, replacement.....Interestingly enough as it is, but that's actually a good "weathering" additive! Even tho, its not a tone of sort, you know?

Thanks Ken, John I am still trying to figure out what I want to model I grew up in the Cleveland Ohio area and the Pennsy ran threw the middle of town. But I also like a lot of the fantasy stuff TYCO and others put out in the 70's & 80"s. I'm working on a string of silver tankers with Silver Streak C430's on the head end and Caboose. Andy

Ken, That red circle would look GREAT but then looking and imagining them both, would stand out as well. both good choices none-the-less! The round circle of red, looks more like a red metal treatment "primer" and the bright red, looks like a paint type bright red, and not a primer....
Andy, well you at least got an idea of what your looking to model. Any time frame or era?

Ken, Did you remove the cupola? I have the same car sides (I think) Mine are die cast metal.....looks good, can't wait to see the other one with the red windows, or are you "toying" with that thought on the outside braced model?
And with the "crew car" making a MOW train too?

You sound like me Ken, I mean really, all the parts... I just can't help myself at times, specially at a good price or such yard sale garage sale, show, you name it I'm ALWAYS on the look!
I tell ya tho, I'm seemingly, looking for those metal handrails you pictured in the one pic that has a "crook" in them to stick out or seemingly to stick out or protrude from the body lines to offer a depth grab from the end of the car end.
Gonna be green too? (yawn, I hear that I haven't been sleeping well the past 2 days!)

as we are such a small railroad, and with economy as it is,a bit of cost cutting, might leave us no choice but to combine the wage car with a caboose, and end up with this,a cab-over-wage car

Covered Windows were for safety. The Feds required special safety glass before the end of the caboose era, due to projectiles thrown, or shot at the train. Locomotive have the same requirements, thus steel plates were cheaper and used where possible.

THOSE wavy handrails are from that same Silver Streak caboose on the COTW thread a couple weeks ago. They're the end handrails. Want them too? I may not be using those either.
