Being my railroad is a tourist railway which I make exactly the way I wish, I'm always looking for new project engines and new coaches and things that I think would suit my tourist railroad, the Santa Clarita Valley Railroad. I was over in Ventura County spending the day with my older brother who lives in Camarillo so after lunch we went to the Fillmore & Western Railway which is an actual tourist railway that we've been going to since it opened in 93. After looking around we walked into the antique shop across the street from the railways parking lot and found a big selection of HO rolling stock. Picked up 3 cars for $15 because they were the ones I wanted most Among these 3 were a teal ATSF cattle car, an all metal CB&Q hopper, and a TYCO clearance car. The clearance car was the first thing that drew my attention, mainly because it was half a coach, half an open platform with a small storage bin in the middle of the platform. The second I saw it and looked it over the idea sparked in my head, I would make it into an excursion car. So after I got home I removed the platform and used a bench grinder to remove the little storage bin in the middle. Doing that gave me a gaping hole in the middle which I knew had to be filled so benches could be installed. So I found 2 extra blair line wood grade crossings I had left over from my station project so I cut the small wood strips into 2 main portions and one small portion. I installed the little sections one at a time and glued them in. The small last little portion had to be elevated so that the walkway from the coach portion would be like a ramp down to the open portion. Photos will explain better. So once the hard work was done I painted the platform, replaced the washers for the truck screws, then started putting it back together. Regardless of if the doorway piece was supposed to be taller then the coach portion I spent about 5 minutes filing it down to the height of the coach portions roof. Got that all done then painted the roof.
I don't have photos of the roof painted but it is now and now all that's left is buying the benches then that will complete the fun little project! Upon anyone's request I will post photos of past excursion car projects. I've made excursion cars out of gondolas, flatcars, and I even cut a coach in half (horizontally) to make one. I'm always up for making new stuff for my tourist railway, least it keeps me busy
this was right after I removed the platform base
after the storage compartment was removed the whole started being filled with cut to size portions of an old blair line wood grade crossing.
second portion added
last portion added. It was set at an angle so it would be like a ramp down to the open area of the excursion car. Was filed to complete this process
once the painted platform with the middle door section was installed, the middle sections roof had to be filed down to the same height as the coach portions roof. The completed filing process is shown here. Roof was later painted but I have yet to photograph that
after the long day of work this is the nearly completed car!
Don't worry after I get the benches Saturday I'll be sure to get photos of the completed car. Also a note the roof has been painted I just forgot to get a photo of that. Guess you'll just have to wait till Saturday to see it all completed
