So . . . I'm cleaning up this motor from an early Mantua brass and cast 2-6-0 Mogul and I remove all this "fuzz" from between the magnet and the front of the magnet housing. Now I'm wondering if this was some kind of a felt pad that was supposed to be there to hold lubricant? Anyone know about this? Or is it just accumulated fuzz? Also, note the way the lead wire connects directly to the brush.

Mantua's Cyclodpedia (circa 1953) describes the Mogul motor (#724) as "oil-less". So it must be fuzz.

Correction that "fuzz" is a plate of cloth used to hold oil in that area to lubricate that rear bearing of the motor.....Its not 100% oil-less but this aids in the constant need of oil during running and such......

Yep, it's felt bearing packing to hold extra oil. Don't pull it out!

So . . . I guess now that I've pulled it all out and trashed it, I can find a little piece of felt to replace it? A learning experience indeed.

Barry,
Yerp, replace it with a small section, with a small hole in the middle for the end of the shaft to go into to keep it from causing friction right there.....

Once in place, then lightly "soak" it in the oil you use for lubrication of motor shafts.....But NOT dripping wet either!!!! Just damp.....

Got it running yesterday. Using a borrowed Rogers 4-6-0 tender. I can get it to run moderately slow, but going for smooth slow stops and starts is a bit sketchy even with your hand on the throttle. And it runs too hot for my tastes. Here's a short video of it http://youtu.be/BW23_XWdQwI.
I also have a question: the cab is in two pieces. It was soldered together with just a little flat piece of brass lying on top of the two sides. Is that the way it should be done?
