That's always a good looking set! (I myself just wished they would have made the same at one point with a Bay Window caboose.....) Would fit my B&O prototype modeling a bit closer.....

BUT, none-the-less, a good looking set, either way! I have the Shark, just not the caboose! (Wait a second), I think, I have that caboose! I'll have to hunt it down in my organizations in the shop......

Thanks, John. Yeah its a pricey one given its DCC and Sound. It's an Intermountain model.

Hayden, I'm not sure they are worth the effort. They have a very cheap can motor, but they are geared to run very slow, so their slow speed performance is OK-ish. The main problem is that they are noisy, as you would expect for a cheap motor and high gearing. Also, it is all plastic, including the frame, so it doesn't pull much.

Mantuas are much better designed.

I do like the fact that their wheel diameter is smaller than your typical 51-inch 0-6-0 model. If I remember they are 46 or 48-inches in diameter. And also the side rods are nice and thin, not over sized. I have a second one of these that I'm kitbashing (yes, yet another project waiting to be finished ) that will be a small wood-burner similar to an engine that the NWP ran near Fort Bragg. I considered replacing the motor, but I might just use it and live with the noise.

It's definitely for slow speed, just a couple cars, and bring your ear plugs.

Thomas,
No traction banded drivers on this AHM/Rivarossi locomotive? Strange, I'll haveto look at mine and see if it has any!

On the motor, is it mounted "vertical" inside the shell? I wonder if the worm needs some heavier grease.....As that can quiet it down alittle, and add a small amount to the shaft bearing on the end that has the motor brushes, but only a little DO NOT over do it....Then the front bearing, with a Q-tip, add a little to the shaft and smear that tiny bit of grease, back to the bearing and then spin the worm gear with your finger in reverse direction to pull the grease, into the bearing.....

This should help the noise just a little bit and be more pleasing to the ear!

Nope, no traction bands and no deep flanges either. Just normal RP25 flanges. This AHM engine was manufactured in Hong Kong, not by Rivarossi. Still, I think you are right--with the correct lubrication it might quiet down a bit.

Here are two more pics:

(Yes, that bandaged finger is a model railroad injury... a wayward X-acto knife found it's way into my finger while I was assembling a station shed.)

Hyde, yeah, but even the USRA's could be "custom" to slight options, per railroad, that were really noticeable once that "spotting" feature was figured out.....Ken's I believe is a USRA model, but a "generic" one not modeled after any one of them specifically, which gave way to the purchaser to do his own custom fitting or "bling" as we call it as detailers.....

John, the Hercules 0-6-0t was sold by either Bachmann or AHM. it is in a box somewhere so I cant check which name is on the bottom right now. I think it is AHM for it was in a album I have of AHM locos. The engines are the same. All that changes is the paint and the name on the bottom. I have 2 of the others for sure and maybe 3. I know I have a PRR< and the Peabody. I kind of think I have the Burlington RR one also. I don't remember who released which one.

note: also Bachmann released another 0-6-0t 10 or 12 years ago with a different body. A much more older looking saddle tanker in their Spectrum line. Now this one just released by Bachmann Spectrum shown in this topic, is Bachmann's 4th 0-6-0t, using the third different body.

My LOTW(s)

Been a while and will probably be a while again, I had over 75 topics to view... quit after three.

So I'm posting two:

First a Lionel PRR Rectifier purchased about two weeks ago:

Second, A Varney Super Pacific 4-6-2 steam locomotive purchased a couple days ago for ~&60 including s/h.

I've got 2 Lotw's. The first is my new Mantua 0-8-0. It has a can motor and directional lights. The second, below, is a little 0-4-0 that I restored mechanically and it now runs better than new--I left the outside crusty and dusty because I liked the 'natural' weathering.

When you see the 2 domes, Tyco road name, and those old style tender trucks. You know this was a all metal Tyco 0-4-0 switcher.
What kind of engineer doesn't wipe down his locomotive with a lightly oiled rag, removing some of the grime, and make his Iron Horse a little better looking.

Love the 0-8-0 and 0-4-0! But if it were me I'd be stripping the shifter, painting everything shiny, and putting it back together That's just me. It's what I did for my 2 shifters. And started doing on my 3rd one!
my personal favorite #5
the #99, finished back in may. #5 was finished in may of last year. Fun irony, #99 shown here was originally the parts engine for #5 shown above. After #5 was made operational I started putting back together #99 for a future restoration
and just how did we get #99 operational? By buying another parts engine of course The engine that put #99 operational is on the far left and has already been repainted in preperation for a future restoration. Now someday #19 will roam the rails with her "sisters" 5 and 99 but not for a while. And no I don't plan to get another parts engine.

That's so true.... If you can find me, in the future of course as I have more pressing projects and matters to tend to, a complete shifter frame and tender with no boiler then I'd be happy The reason I don't want another complete condition parts engine like the #99 and #19 were, is because I want the cycle to end. Plain and simple if I have a frame, cylinders, and boiler left over I'd be way to tempted to make it a project
