Tyco and very nice shape with both of the pilots intact, when many examples have the bottom missing.

My LOTW is a Rocky Mountain Line SD24. It's not nearly in as nice condition as Mike's SD24, but it has a CDROM motor and it runs well.

microbuss, yeah it looks that way, but actually the sideframe was reglued that way when I got it. Those Tyco PT sideframes are pretty fragile. Someday I will reglue it so it looks straight.

Odd and fictious you say Ben? How about my AHM Conrail a-3 shifter? Finished the cosmetic and mechanical overhaul on it. Cosmetically I made the new valve seats out of wood (things on top of the cylinders on each side), replace the fireman side handrail and the 3rd handrail spoke, sealed up a crack in fireman side step on the pilot, soldered a tender wire back to the motor, and fixed the cylinder casting. Then simple cleaning and oiling and bam the engine runs fantastic! Fun little guy to run!

Hyde, I dig that little switcher; especially the headlight and tender. What the does the emblem on the side of the smokebox say? Do you have a closer photo of the valve seats? I'm not sure I see them? Thanks. Love to see photos of the steamers. Barry

Hey Barry! Thank you very much for all your kind comments on my little A-3! Much appreciated! Any who I couldn't remember so I jumped out of my seat and went to the garage to take it out of the engine house and have a look. Honestly I'm only a teenager and have pretty good eyes but all I could fully identify on the emblem was A-3 and that's the type of engine it is. Maybe some close up photos I took may help. It wasn't the first time I made valve seats. I have another A-3, the SP Daylight version which needed one but unfortunately it's ilder gear was chipped and I replace it with a slightly larger one and to sum everything up I modified everything internall for the new gear but it never panned out but I have photos of the valve seat I made for that A-3. I didn't take photos of my Conrail's valve seats that I made before I painted and installed them. It's a very tricky process not only making them but making sure they fit right and align with the cylinders. Photos I took should explain everything.
This is my other A-3. This is what the valve seat looks like before they are painted.
here's a view of both the valve seats I made for the Conrail A-3.
overview of the valve seat and emblem on the smokebox

My LOTW is an AHM GP18 that I picked up at a show. It started life as an undecorated unit with some weird primer paint applied to it. It will now spend the rest of its life as Conway Scenic Railroad number 573. The 573 is a GP-7 so I will have to do a little bit of disguising to pull that off. This is the progress of it so far; custom painted, lettered and decaled!
Before /tyco/forum/uploaded/CSRR7470/IMG_0834_zps96af304c.jpg /tyco/forum/uploaded/CSRR7470/IMG_0835_zps742862e0.jpg
And after /tyco/forum/uploaded/CSRR7470/IMG_1110_zps03d06020.jpg /tyco/forum/uploaded/CSRR7470/IMG_1105_zps0b5d0c97.jpg /tyco/forum/uploaded/CSRR7470/IMG_1104_zps8fd05b62.jpg
Still needs some work. The decals need to be cut to let the air out so the microsol does its thing. Plows need some work and the numberboards. Needs a bell on the short nose, a winterization hatch and a P5 horn. Windows as well as ditch lights need to be installed. Fun project so far!

Hyde, thanks for the additional photos. I see what you're talking about now (e.g., valve seats). Looks like "A3" on that emblem to me as well. What, does it just have some scroll work around the A3? I went to look for one on eBay to see if they had any close up photos. Must be a pretty popular engine; didn't see any. Thanks Hyde.

Anytime! That was the problem, I couldn't identify what the words around the A-3 emblem said even with my good eyes Well if you look under HO 0-4-0 you're bound to find one of the more popular A-3 road names, C&NW, B&O etc. http://www.ho-scaletrains.net/ahmhoscalelocomotives/id87.html

Matt,
Be sure to use as much of the Diosol, OR ANY decal set you can to lay those decals, flat to the under surface! That will make them "contour" to the irregular surface under them.
I have to say, its a GREAT looking loco at this point, question is, where you from? That's a local tourist line to me, and was wondering if you might be someplace close?

John, I'm from MA, about 2 hours away from North Conway and my parents would vacation there every year. It was the Conway Scenic that made me fall in love with trains. I actually worked for the Conway Scenic as well.
The decals for the most part are flat except for the large yellow stripe on the bottom of the engine. I still haven't popped the air bubbles their and cut them so that they will lay flat when I apply the microsol. Unfortunately, two of the decals on the firemans side came off while applying the microsol and had to be reapplied hence why they look a little cloudy in some spots. Thanks for the kind comment!

In real life they are called valve seats well in reality there's balance strips and so much more to the valves then just the seat but that's what it's referred to as. To be honest I just kept it plain and simple with wood. I've been pretty good at making things or shaping things out of wood. The paint was not the glue. I painted these before mounting them. Then using a couple drops of ZAP CA it stuck no problem and they aren't going anywhere.

Hyde, Yes to an extent, you would be right, the valve "seats" would be on the INSIDE of those "covers", those are nothing like "seats"..... The seats, would be just above the cylinder, itself, that move with the rods connected right to make the inlet valve open as the outlet valve is closing, and then as the inlet valve closes the outlet valve opens to create the "chuff"
Those square parts you made is just a head to house these parts, and the tops of them, would be the covers, more times then not, the tops are made to be walked on, as the actual part becomes extremely hot during use, and the tops are "stand-off" type walk ways to get air flow to cool them, to try and prevent burnt feet or even hands if and when the loco came into the engine house for work, and needed to be touched for any reason. This is why in a lot of pictures you will see the tops of these type cylinders have what looks to be "fins".. Quite the same as a head on a motorcycle motor, just not as effective, due to the extreme amounts of heat being "spent" near them, unlike that of a motorcycle......Being even now, they still carry these fins, but most motorcycles have a small radiator to cool them!
As far as making those on the model.....Wood isn't a good choice for this....Eventually that Zap will fail.....Reason? Because its NOT holding the wood like a solvent glue would, on plastic. Specially a plastic welder.....See, Zap is a CA glue, it makes a bond between the 2 surfaces, UNLIKE plastic weld type glues, it makes the plastic soften to make the 2 parts, on solid part. The Zap is merely an adhesive between the lower plastic, and the paint, on the wood. The Zap, would have done slightly better if it was applied to the BARE wood, not the painted wood as its only holding to the paint, not the wood at all! That paint, flakes and leaves go, your glue bond will fail due to this fact, as its merely holding the plastic, to the paint on the wood, not the wood itself. I can not stress this enough and that painted wood is more likely to fail if the paint is Acrylic, OR any sort of water base type paint.....REAL enamels, hold to the surface they're applied to better then ANY water based paint. Specially glued surfaces!
I'm not saying that wood isn't a good material to use. BUT, not on a moving model it isn't! Vibration, movement, sudden jolts of force, you name it, that Zap no matter how good a glue it is, will fail....just due to the way and materials applied too.
The same size plastic, would have been a better choice and is just as easy to shape as the wood is! Which needless to say is a more permanent repair then the wood is going to be, PLUS, the plastic, is more close to represent the metal that is to be in that place, then the wood grain, of the wood shown through the paint! To be honest, a few passes with a file, NOT sand paper, on plastic shapes easier, I think, then wood in small pieces such as this! ALTHO, a little care can shape plastic with the basics, sandpaper or as simple as a fingernail file! Then, the surface to be adhered to, is added WITHOUT paint, allowed to dry/cure, and then painted to match the whole part.

That is an impressive model! Can you give some details as to manufacturer? Very nice example, and just looking at it in the photos, I'd say it doesn't need a thing. Looks old and well-used - EXCELLENT.

I have to say guys, I just wished the B&O had a couple of the C-415's....I think in either of the B&O "switcher" paint under B&O, would have looked AWESOME!
Sadly, they never had much on the roster of ALCO builds....

Barry, the builder's plates on both sides read:
"Juniata Shops A3s 3-1906 1232"
Just a few years before Smurf-rail. This is where a jeweler's loupe comes in handy.
I installed a smooth running can in this B&O fantasy unit, and now it doesn't wake the dead.

Not a bad looking little unit tho.... I'm just sure I could "handle" that gold headlight.......
