Wow, I guess I'm in the number one spot this week. My baby this week is something I just got and she is a lovely edition to my collection. I have been chasing one of these for quite a while and when this came up I went all in and won on ebay. My wife told me this lis my last train for three months until after the Sequestration / furlough ends for government employees. So here she is, my TYCO GM&O 2-8-0:

It's not new, but it could not have been ran no more that 5 times because it is in great shape even though the box is not. I also still have to change the traction tires, when I get some curage because it's not as easy as regular TYCO's

Posted this one before but now that I fully finished it, better show it again Varney 0-4-0T "Little Joe" that originated out of our own Sean Naylor's collection. Went to my friend Matt who sent it to me to be completely rebuilt but during its shipment period I helped him acquire a Rivarossi UP FEF and in return he gave me this little engine. Quite the project, ton of frame work but it didn't just stop there, motor repair, fully cleaning, and new paint. I rebuilt the front steps and made the back steps. Being it's my Seybold Locomotive Works Shop Goat it had to be lettered accordingly Use my label maker and it is lettered on both sides. Will trim the excess with an exacto knife later. Before and after shots.

bad lighting didn't quite capture the bright orange

I have that steamer too! My favorite among the Tyco variety. Got mine with box and a Mantua 2-8-2 for $25 on eBay.

That locomotive looks real nice and seeing the photo gives me a chance to ask you a question about it. Do you notice the wheels being smaller than on some other Tyco-Mantua locos? Reason I ask is that I just got this 4-8-0 and the wheels on it are like 70% the diameter of the wheels on the 4-6-0. Thanks, Barry

** Those wheels aren't that small. it is just a big engine. I'll make sure I get a photo soon of it alongside a mantua 2-8-2. frank

I'm not being critical of the wheel size. I just noted that on the 4-8-0 (Tyco-Mantua) that I just got, the wheels are considerably smaller than on the 4-6-0 (Tyco-Mantua) I have. And it looked odd when I put them side by side. But then I searched on line and found that the drivers on Rogers 4-6-0s were bigger than on the Rogers 4-8-0s. ?Maybe they discovered that with more wheels they didn't need to be as big?

Barry,
Its quite simple, really! The frame that these drivers are in..... the 4-8-0 and the 4-6-0, are the SAME length, meaning that the distance from the front axle to the rear axle is the same on BOTH locomotives, so in the 4-6-0, which would have been a bit faster running one less driver meaning speed in a lot of cases, had larger diameter drivers....The 4-8-0, had one more driver then the other, and had 8 drivers at what looks to be about 52 to 57 inch drivers to the 63 or 64 inch drivers that the 4-6-0 has....Because one more axle in that same given space, to fit them all equally, had to be less diameter to fit. This also entails the fact that smaller drivers, were a sight of less speed, BUT pulling power....
In the days of steam, the drivers circumference was the speed and power of the actual locomotive! NOT the amount of boiler pressure expelled onto the cylinders! Reason? Well if you take a 57 inch driver, measure the outside circumference of that driver wheel its much shorter then that of say a 64 inch driver, circumference....The less circumference of the driver, the slower the movement, less the travel, the larger the circumference, the faster the travel be length of roll, see?
Bigger drivers equals more speed, smaller drivers equals less speed. less speed equals more power, more speed, equals less power. Make sense? Now, you take all this, plus boiler pressure, and add that into the weight on each drivers "axle" and you can get the factor of adhesion, and then taking that, the weight of the locomotive, and boiler pressure, you can get the tractive effort.
Tractive Effort, is steam loco Horsepower, Factor of adhesion is Steam loco "traction" weight on drivers to give it the umph it needs to start moving a 15,000 ton freight train, or a 4,500 ton passenger train. This however, became easier at time passed and roller bearing were introduced into the journal boxes of the freight car trucks, better known as "hot boxes" BEFORE the roller bearing was even designed!
Now a short lesson, the 4-6-0 a "10-Wheeler" was a more common locomotive in the United States, then that of the 4-8-0, which is a "Mastodon".
