Speaking as a Californian, I can say this
Niles Canyon - Niles Canyon Railroad San Francisco - Fishermans Wharf streetcars, the Cable Car Musem, and the MUNI Cable Car system (ride number 624, that one was in Disney's "The Love Bug") Sacramento - California State Railroad Museum and the Sacramento River Railroad Jamestown - Sierra Railroad, completely essential to get behind the famed Movie Star Locomotivr No. 3 Felton - Roaring Camp and Big Trees Railroad or the Santa Cruz Boardwalk train OR Yosemite - Yosemite Sugar Pine Railroad Pacific Coast Highway - California Route No. 1, runs alongside the old EssPee coastal route, you can probably catch the Starlight Los Angeles - Union Station Anaheim - Disneyland Railroad Perris - Orange Empire Railroad Museum, biggest collection of Pacific Electric stock, look for a teen named "Alex Lewis" Burbank - Traveltown and the Los Angeles Live Steamers (come on the third Sunday of the month when Walt's barn is open) San Diego - Amtrak-Santa Fe Union Station
Enjoy your choices!

Pomona, CA, there is a 4-12-2 on outdoor display. Tehachapi Loop.... some where in southern CA
Somewhere else in CA is SCVR66's train layout
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

Gah! Thank you for reminding me! Forgot to mention the Fairplex Garden Railroad and the Railway and Locomotive Society containing ATSF 3450, the UP Big Three (4014, 9000, and 6915), and SP 5021! Best to go there though in early September during the LA County Fair.

thanks to NC Shortlines for the publicity shout out! Yeap Rey really nailed it with all the great places to go. From experience I can tell you Roaring Camp, Niles Canyon, Traveltown, Pomona Fairplex, and the Fillmore & Western are all really great places! I have some photos from a couple months back at my visit to the Fairplex and while yes the UP 9000 (4-12-2) is really cool we also can't forget that they have a big boy, dd40ax, SP 4-10-2 (three cylinder engine) and many other great pieces. I'll just be posting the stars of their collection. /tyco/forum/uploaded/scvr66/20130708151715_up.jpg UP 9000 /tyco/forum/uploaded/scvr66/20130708152540_big.jpg UP 4014, one of 8 Big Boy's remaining. /tyco/forum/uploaded/scvr66/20130708153006_die.jpg UP 6915 DD40ax /tyco/forum/uploaded/scvr66/20130708153732_sp.jpg SP 5021 a 4-10-2 3 cylinder engine.
I also have a shop tour video I made when I went to Roaring Camp. Shows the true appreciation for the railfans as lead CMO Tom Shrieve gave me the tour and offered me a small cab ride in 3 truck Shay #7 "Sonora" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNc-Z0yWQpU
