I saw a number of transfer cabooses advertised and found that the purchase threhold was a but high. I realized I had several duplicate Athearn cabooses acquired from various swap meets, so I figured I would try my hand at my first attempt at merging two separate car bodies to make my own.
I used a masking tape line to identify the midpoints on each car, then used a Zona saw (the one with the wood handle) to cut each where marked.
I used a piece of scrap plastic glued in as a reinforcement on each side, then used Squadron white putty as my filler, sanding and refilling twice to ensure a smooth fit.

I was originally planning to solder phosphor bronze wire into a set of side & end railings, but realized I was working with very small pieces and chickened out in favor of .020 steel wire in a novel railing arrangement.
Glazed the windows, weighted the car to NMRA recommendations, painted it for my Sioux Lake railroad and glued red jewel pieces to small styrene tube ends for safety lights over each door.
This one sat on the bench for 2 months while I dithered about the railings, but now it is ready for yard crew transfer action.

Ron, Yet again, NICE kitbash!
Transfer cabeese are interesting to say the least! I'm going to do a few of tghem, as well, HOWEVER mine will have really long walkways on each end, have a very short body of the "cab" in the middle of the frame!
Again, that is when I get around to it! As I actually have a few of them, to do!

Ben....You would NOT believe what some Railroaders do in the need of food! I have seen it on CSX! On a line in my home town that was a mine lead for a coal tipple....Was a regular bay window caboose....with a grill on one end plateform! To this day, I'm kicking myself as I never did get a picture of it........AND it was sitting still! Last I knew, the same caboose is there still I just don't know if it still has the grille chained to the handrailing on the one end!
Funny stuff tho!

Excellent work!
Just a little weathering on the trucks and underframe and she'll look top notch.
Be creative, share and enjoy the hobby :-)

Wouldn't that be a kick! Grilling hamburgers and steaks on the rear platform while playing with real trains- what a life!

Nice Boose! There is a yard crew here in Baltimore that uses a small gas grill on the short hood of their GP.

Ben, You lucky turd! I didn't get pictures of the CSX caboose I seen with that!
Guys, seriously, on the nose end of a GP? that has to draw attention, but the employees gotta eat somehow!
Got the life.... RR'in, and grill'in, yep, you betcha!
