Found this while browsing. Appears to be a redbox and or one of the last years of Mantua production which could have something to do with it but does that really make it go for more then $100? Especially missing a drive shaft?

It's looks. And drive shafts can be found and made for little cost. Looks like it would be worth $100. I wouldn't pay that much though but it is worth it.

Love the looks and know getting a drive shaft wouldn't be breaking a sweat but I don't know. Don't think I'd pay that much for a general.

You know, it might just be my imagination, but it seems to me that model railroad items sell for more when they have "for repair" in the title. Has anyone else noticed this, or am I just having a railroad fever?

Your all right! Tho it seems odd, Model Railroad items do sell for more with "repairs" in the tittle ANYWHERE, not just Ebay!

As for the General, back in the 1990's the old Mantua "Blue Box" era, these are $95.00 each! (Yes, I have one), that I was gotten for a gift at my birthday, can't remember what "age" I had turned now but, I got the B&O General, in red, With no road number on it..... So, in all reality, till the market went to where it is today...These loco's sold regularly at those high prices!

Then it comes down to common sense, of the seller and the buyer, do you want to sell the item as the seller, and would rather take some cash on the item, OR take it home again, and not get "X" amount out of it? Sell needs to think, what am I willing to pay? IF this is high in number, then this is where the companies get their base prices from.....

Funny, I watched this auction too. This was the second time it was listed though; the first time it went for well under $100 and I can only assume was returned because the missing drive shaft wasn't mentioned. If he didn't have to pay for shipping, it certainly worked out in the seller's favor.

There are a lot of Pennsy modelers out there, and this is the best scheme I've seen on the General. I saw a blue box version in a Tuscan Pennsy scheme at a train show that was pretty ghastly.

Nelson, I still love my B&O "Maroon" one! (its suppose to represent the William Mason, BUT, I got a WAY better one as the William Mason, as you know!)

I am thinking of painting one of my other 4-4-0's in the "green" version of the William Mason now, just to have both in each scheme! Which represents 2 different eras....

Hyde, what does the V&T one look like that your looking for? I'm not familiar with it!

Hyde, the all blue one then? I thought I may have had it as I got a set of 4-4-0's painted EXACTLY the same, without a road name on them, but in mint shape and was wondering.....I haven't looked them up to date to see what road name they actually are but.....I know one of them is going to get painted! Not sure whats going to happen to the other one!

I've wondered too. Maybe it's Civil War nostalgia, too many model railroaders watching the Buster Keaton Movie, or worse yet, everybody just wants a General. I have a friend who's selling his extra for $50. I've been on the fence, but I'm just not sure... -
