Well my next "custom" posting, is something Sean "Mustangs_n_Trains" inspired.....

He will atest, I had PM'ed him for length of a "Payroll" car he got by Ambroid I believe it was, and I had no patients to wait to hear back, and started one of my own....

It began life as a Athearn B&O Observation, that I had laying around in the shop, missing EVERYTHING, trucks, frame, window glass, weight....ALL I had was the body shell!

Showing the "walkway" side.....IF you look closely, you can see the interior of the car as well! I added in items shop made, to fill the void, and resemble RPO type fittings, for delivering mail to B&O Employee's, letters, packages, etc. As well as its actual purpose..Pay Checks! Kind of like a Bank on Rail!

Its not painted as its going to be yet! This is just how it looks before I make it "match" the rest of my B&O "MOW" train.....I just thought it looked AWESOME in the B&O passenger colors!

Well, now with more pictures, showing the end of the open walkway, and the loading door side.....

Showing the "loading door" side.....IF you look closely, you can see the interior of the car as well, again. Also in this side, the opening/working loading door, I have yet to add the door slide, and the door, all made from brass. As well as interor lighting and to add to that as well is the cart, just inside the loading door. I also got alot of outside details to add as well. Diaphram, and metal grab irons and hand rails other then is seen on it already.....

Sadly, I had to put this car on hold, as I "was" working on this, BEFORE my right hand got broke......Then that happened, and had to put EVERYTHING on hold, now the hand is better and I'm working on posting some long over due pictures of that was up to prior to all this health crap thats happened, and what my plans are for the future, nearest that is!

Thomas,
Thanks! A lot of work went into that car, and more to go into it, as all the fittings inside, sheving and such, cubby holes cabinets are all millings off my milling machine from white vinyl trim boards I kept from left over trim jobs I've had in the past (I'm a finish carpenter by trade) and something told me those chunks of 4 foot vinyl trim boards that where 5 quarter would come in handy for something.....WELL all my passenger cars, railroad station freight rooms, and now post office, stores, any building needing shelving, cubby hole cabinets, or any type cabinetry will have them!

Nelson,
Yeah to say the least, it is unique....I seen the one Sean got that was all wood designed, and thought, WELL, lets see if I can do the same thing, in metal riveted steel.....I must say, it turned out better then I first thought it would! (I plan to make 3 more of these, "Payroll cars" 2 wooden types, and one more metal side......) I thought about a smooth side, car, but that be streamlined and I'm not sure I could make that "happen" and keep the body lines "streamlined" to match the car.....I'm good, and I know it, but I'm NOT that good!

Way back when, that was how railroad men got paid. The payroll train came by, the workers lined up and they collected their pay.

Blackstone,
Back in the days that "Banks" were not as common as they are today (on every street corner) The railroad had a collection of cars typically made to be Banks on wheels, they went all over the railroads line to pay their employees there weekly or bi-weekly pay checks.....SOME of these cars, carried only railroad "checks"....OTHERS carried both, checks and cash. and then some carried Checks, Cash, AND Railroad Payroll coins, redeemable to ANY local General store that was excepting of "railroad currency" of the time, that by my knowledge, the B&O, had the same coins worth $50, each. ANY local General Stores and or local banks back then, you could turn in the coins, and receive 50 dollars.....Granted, you didn't get "change" so you would get say 2 to 4 coins, and then a check, or cash to redeem the remaining amount of money you got earned by hours worked.

A short lesson on these cars.....

They were not considered as revenue cars! That means they made no money for the general fund of the railroads income. This means, a lot of times these cars when in use were put under the "MOW" department as the MOW department did not make money......
