Guys, I was out about....ohhhh I don't know 4 or 5 years ago, and visited the local "Antique Mall" store to see what they might have had, (Normally I steer clear of these places as they are a tourist trap) But this preticular one has good deals every now and again.....
So upon looking around, I found a HO scale Railroad station......one I might add, have always liked the looks of it, was built, dusty, and had a really good price tag on it....$3.59, if I recall correctly, I know it wasn't much, and was worth that to me to "fix it up" and hopefully add it to my layout as my Depot. Or well, one of them!
Now, needless to say this is a VERY common kit.....I bought it already assembled of its previous owner, but, not done so well, that it even past muster with me to be added as is to my layout. SO......I got to looking at it, it was A. covered in dirt, dust, and what looked to be hair! This needed to be remedied pretty quick, and a sprayer hose in the kitchen sink took care of that issue......
Now, B. was something of a different story, removing all that dirt and all, revealed the real issue.......glue smudges, EVERYWHERE!!!!!!! No amount of paint or filing, sanding could have helped this thing......I thought forsure, I just waisted $3.59.....(So, didn't my wife!)
Well I got to looking at it a bit closer, and had removed some parts as the good part (OR, should I say, GREAT part was, ONLY the roof was glued together or onto the sides with Testors "gel-glue" or as they called it "Seamless-Glue". The remaining station was completely glued together with white Elmer's glue! SO, I took the whole station, and soaked it in hot water for 24 hours.......
Remember this was some time ago, 4 or 5 years ago......So, once it basically soaked itself into pieces......EXCEPT the roof to the walls, I had to cut them apart, one knife swipe at a time. No, I wasn't concerned for the walls getting "scored" as they were in no shape to worry about. I was going to merely save all the doors and windows for other scratchbuilding endeavors. Along with trim, and any other "detail" left un harmed from the white glue.
Then as if it were yesterday, I recall that following Sunday, was a Train Show! I went and found a 6 inch thick stack, of Walthers Brick sheet, all different collors, dark red, red, and cream as they called it, the whole stack, was $10.00 (I didn't even talk them down in price!) They had no packaging but were all in good shape so I bought them, and then the station, had a NEW life!
So, I got home, and that evening, before it got late, I began to "brick" the whole station, a few hours later, I had the "freight" end of the station, bricked. The next day after work, I began to do the same on the "passenger" end.....
I got the wole station bricked, and got the bricks painted, "Brick red" and sat the kit down to just recently. I thought since I'm home from the hospital, this is the besttime to finish a few buildings.....This station, being the first!

As you can see, AND if you know what model this axctually is from the work I have done, A LOT has been moved around, detail added and building structure area's changed.....
AND in its completed form, a few "extra" Mini-scenes added on all the sides of the building, andthere is more to come!

Well, here is some more of this same station.....

I had made my own roof over hang supports, added my own window sill "concrete" slabs, Bricked the Station Cupola. Built my own rendition "Tickey Window", and with all the min-scenes, you'll see a family sitting with friend on the bench out side, with their daughter tossing trash in the trash bin. A line of people to buy tickets, a fellow waving at a engineer exiting the station. Dock worker manning a 4-wheel cart. A couple of B&O employee's taking a break on the dock. A junk tire by the dumpster, (stereotype) A section of the dock, removed to allow for the dumpster, and a heating oil tank, a few junk pallets sitting around, another B&O Dock Worker manning a pallet jeck with repairs items on the pallets to be stored inside with hardware sacks, and then more waiting people on benches.
I have yet to add the dividing interior walls for lighting purposes, and a working signal on the mainline side of the station, and will add in some interior people to support the outside people......THEN to make this even more interesting, I'm building a SECOND structure, to extend the frieght room end, with a ajoining MOW office, with shop floor, and drafting roof office for the MOW crew to know whats next! That will be made to resemble this building, and have extra spurs to come between them for unloading purposes!
Once all thats done, and ready for the layout, will post pictures then!
ENJOY!

Damn Ben that was quick! LOL Thanks tho! I got signs to add on, I want to add in the interior BEFORE I add the signage, so that it doesn't get broken! (I also got brass exterior lights to add as well!) PLUS the whole switchboard electrical controls to control ALL the lighting effects I plan to add to it!
P.S. Does anyone know what this station was custom based from? What one, and who made it? I know who all this is, but was a good questionnaire on the original maker of it.....

The Rico Station! And I think it was a Pola kit, imported by many companies over the years. Did you cover the original structure, or simply make new walls? Awesome job. It gives the station a completely different east coast flavor.

Nelson, You would be correct! It is the Rico station.....NOW, comes the funny part, you got what station it is, and you know a lot of it....NOW, knowing "me" should tell you who the maker/importer was!
Being said that, the brick work was done, merely to "cover" the exterior walls.....I wasn't about to try to cut each section to size......Remember, the walls ALL were attached to the roof....When I got it, it was ALL bare plastic! NEVER painted, in the yellow plastic. Nothing detailed, and not a single drop of paint on the windows or anything....(Yeah, I know, I got lucky!)
Granted, covering the original walls made some things alittle more difficult, BUT it added to it.....I had to custom fit the roof on the dormers and such for the extra thickness of the wall section in those locations, AND to that gave me some added thickness for gluing, and support.
As you mentioned, Nelson, I wanted the added Eat Coast flavor.....Where I grew up in Pennsylvania, right across the street was the Western Maryland Station, and a block away was the B&O station, both "Meyersdale" on there signage.....The foot print of BOTH those stations in real life, matched that of the interior of this "Rico" station! BUT built as factory, was WAY to western..... Way to much western "Gingerbread" on it too! Which, I removed and saved for other times of building design!

I'd have to say that is one of the best recovery stories I've ever heard of. I know it's the same ol' Rico station, but it just looks better. Great job with the details.
I fixed my workbench, I ought to try and get something done like that.

Harrison, Thanks! It was a little bit of work to get it right! Needless to say, when I purchased it, I didn't notice all the glue that was used to simply hold the roof to the tops of the walls was there from the dirt and dust and what looked like some sort of animal hair....When removed as I said, revealed all of that!
The week tho, that I got the station, the up coming Sunday was a local train show, and that's where I grabbed a rather thick stack of Walthers brick sheet to be used for the first time by me, on this station, which actually saved the station.
Needless to say, I model the B&O and Western Maryland, this station being "bricked" fits right in to either one of those railroads! However, because it did turn out so good, I'm working on an "extension" freight building, that is built from another "Rico" station, freight section, with the passenger end, removed, and rebuilt into a MOW Office, with Drafting room for repair designs, which on my layout would be an extension or "Division" office for Maintenance of Way, as the main engine facility/yard will have a Machine Shop for much the same thing! Which is getting ALL the same treatment as the station pictured here has....As it will set relatively close to the station as well! ONCE I have it done, I'll get a picture of how these 2 buildings will be positioned on the layout!
