Well, it's been a while since I posted on the forum, so here goes:
I came across an unusual box car- remade into a head end power car for the Nevada Sothern Railway, a tourist operation.

At the same time, I also found- on Michael Eby's Trainiax website- a line drawing of a similar car, made from a longer box car.

I blended features from both and came up with a design that I then began to work on, using an old 40 ft box car, upgraded with metal wheels.
The interior needed some sort of mechanical payload, but all I could find online regarding what the interior of such a car might look like was this image from an Amtrak Head End Car.

I made a similar compressor and related equipment model from styrene tubing, a CA bottle cap cover, angle styrene and cast off pieces from my scrap bin. The wire mesh I ordered thru Ebay as a sheet from a place in Alabama, and used an ordinary paper punch to make the circular pieces covering the top tubes.

The photo indicated a fairly monochromatic scheme, so I just painted the side tubing silver and left the rest as primer gray. Most of this device will be hidden into the interior of the car anyway.
I used a 40 ft Athearn BB box car and cut a horizontal vent opening, framed it with angle styrene, then attached a rectangle of the wire mesh behind it. I simply glued the louvered panels on the car sides, rather than weaken the shell further with additional cutting of the walls. The panels are made from lap siding styrene from Plastruct.

At one end- as was the case with the Nevada car, I did cut a scale doorway opening. Lacking any ready made parts in my scrap bin, I used scribed styrene and some strip styrene to mafe a door frame and door. The door handle is .025 steel wire. I watched a YouTube video of this railcar and saw that there was a step at the base of the door. Given the proximity of the end ladder and the step, I decided not to place any grabs on either side of the door.
The roof details were made from a Lego tire, a ring magnet from old VCR parts and styrene tube for the roof tanl with .025 wire for the piping. I really don't know what the tube is for, and the other two features seem to be vents for exhaust.
I am still deciding on the paint scheme and will show a completed painted car in a few days.

yeah Very nice project Someday I want to get a model of the GP30 #844  That loco is the reason the 4-8-4 #844 went to #8444

Ron, THATS AWESOME work! The one your making looks to be a 40 foot box car? As the actual car looks to be a 50 footer, NICE conversion!!!!!!
