Does anyone else out there have a Tyco red box era Army train? Could Tyco have used different model tanks on the same car, maybe changed over time? I just bought the flat car on the right on Saturday. I didn't notice at the time that the tank was different. I have two of the cars on the left, and both tanks are the same. I think they're older Sherman type tanks from WWII. The one on the right seems "newer". The car on the right also has sprung trucks with Kadee's added, and the word "Lionel" molded into the plastic under the coupler. I'm only guessing the one on the left is original Tyco, while the one on the right is a Tyco car, but some other tank added at some point.

The tanks did not come with the Army flat cars from the red box era. I think they came with the GI Joe set though.

...no. The GI Joe set came with generic soft-plastic tanks in basic green and Cobra purple. (or was it blue?)
Those cars are either Model Power or AHM.
The tanks may even be from a different model company.

Definitely not a TYCO among your pictures.
(Except the locomotives below.)

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.
"I love your catenary!"
Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

The flatcar so marked is Lionel. The tanks look to be Roco Minitanks, which were first sold as AHM Minitanks in the 60's.

Thanks Brian! I didn't realize that Tony Cook's site had catalogs too. See the first two pages of the 64-65 catalog.

I suspect that with the car I just bought, somebody installed Lionel sprung trucks somewhere along the way, but it's still a Tyco car. I just can't figure out the tanks. In the catalog picture the tanks looks like older Shermans, but none of mine have the small guns and antennas (or whatever they are on top). On the newer car, that tank does have the smaller guns and such that to me look a lot like the catalog pictures.

Thanks GG1 Guy for the AHM lead. I'll look into that.

Hey NewHudson, you got me doing some research and your original analysis might be right. It looks like one or your tanks is a TYCO from the "Military Booster Set-U.S.A. from 1964. Here is a great picture of the set from this site, hope this helps: http://www.tycoforums.com/tyco/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7581 . looks like it may be a TYCO, just missing a machine gun on top.

A note on the tanks, the one on the left is an M-4 Sherman the one on the right is an M-47 patton
just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader

GG1, thanks for posting that link, but I think you just ruined my day! All this time I've had two flats and two tanks for that set and I've been a happy camper. Now it looks like I should have TWO tanks per flat, and it seems my third flat has the wrong tanks. What a bummer!!!!

Here's a pic of the full set that I have. I suspected that the Navy flat wasn't part of the original set. I guess I'll have to find a Navy operating hopper now too.

I have the Army set MIB. My set has 4 ROCO "General Patton" M47 tanks. (ROCO # Z-99)
The Tyco 64/65 and 65/66 catalogs show it with Sherman Tanks.

Makes sense. I thought you were saying the underside of the car was marked.

Here's a 1963 AHM catalog introducing Roco Minitanks on a fish-belly flat.

So I found one of these flats today.

Is the base that holds them on the flat a Tyco piece I'm never going to find loose? I'm sure I can scare up the actual tanks for it, Roco made a lot of that stuff for years.
